vista installation

I am planning on buying the Retail
Vista Ultimate (non-upgrade)...does anyone know how many computers i can install it on?
I have 2 laptops...and don't wish to spend 800$ for both...thanks;

you should have a look for a system builder edition Vista Ultimate (non-upgrade) which is about 150 €... ;)

If Vista is like XP, the "upgrade" is no different from the full version. I've purchased the upgrade for XP, which you can install as a full version by "showing" that you have a CD of 95, 98, 2000 or ME.

Unfortunately MS doesn't offer a "family pack" site license like Apple. You need a unique CD Key/license for each machine.

You can get a "Family Discount" bundle from MS. If you buy a retail boxed version of Vista Ultimate you can order up to 2 product keys for Vista Home Premium for $50 each. You use the same install disc you use to install Ultimate, just choose to install Premium instead. I'm not sure but the wording of the site suggests the Premium keys are "Upgrade" keys [edit, since I'm not sure how 'kosher' the upgrade key work around is, even though it's so obvious I can't really believe they overlooked it.]
