reducing video files

hi-

i'm new to video editing. i've been downloading videos and my files are getting big. i've noticed that two different people can have the same video but one will be a smaller file, usually asf, just a smaller picture playing. is there a video editor or compressor that does this or is that just how the video was recorded? i've tried using a few video compressors to reduce the video but the new file,usually avi or mpeg is always MUCH larger than the original, instead of smaller. am i missing a step? also appreciated would be any tips on burning videos- i have nero.

when your output is larger than you're input you've chosen a wrong bitrate. Try lowering your bitrate. If you want to reduce the size of the picture you have to use a resize filter. E.g. VirtualDub can do that.

With any video file not intended to be played on a standalone player (eg svcd on a dvd standalone) you can just burn the same as any other file. Nero is a great app :) ... just use the wizard if you're a newbie to burning.

Choose "data cd" and at the appropriate screen when you get to choose.... the rest leave on default, theyre pretty self-explanatory if u need to change them. Choose youre file(s) and hit the "burn" button in the top button bar.
