I can encode a file at 2560x1440 no problems with unconstrained profile. Once encoded the file will also open fine in VirtualDub. However for some reason, the file will not play with Windows Media Player or any other player that I know of.

Why?

When you say "will not play," what do you mean exactly? Is there some error or message? Does it open but do nothing? Does it play with audio but no picture?

There is an error message from Windows Media Player that says it is unable to play and then it continues to play the audio only.

You don't have the appropriate codec for playback installed.

Once encoded the file will also open fine in VirtualDubI'm presuming you are trying to play the file on the same system you used to create it. If so, especially since you say VirtualDub CAN open the file, I believe you must have the correct codec residing on that system.

Is it possible that the players you've tried simply can't handle the resolution?

I do have the correct codec, since I can play 1920x1080 files no problem. Also I can open the file and play the 2560x1440 files in VirtualDub fine. So codec it there and working fine.

As for the Player, well I can play 2560x1440 files fine in Windows Media Player v9 fine if encoded with MJPEG. So the player can handle it too! Just not encoded with DivX. Also PowerDVD won't play these AVI/DivX files encoded either!

By the way I tried the exact same file on my other PC and it plays it! So I guess the problem lies with my comptuer and not DivX.

Good job Divx! It is great not having a resolution limit to your fine codec :)

Try this: open a windows media player and play any video, then open a second windows media player and play your video still maintain playing the previous one.
If you can see your video then is a problem of the video driver.

In this case, the first istance of media player use the hardware accellerate video post processing, the second, due to fact that the resource are in use, use the software post processor.

Sadly the Windows Media Player will not allow it to be open twice. Only one can be run at a time.

However I did try another video app to "steal" the overlay and then played the file and still the same error - no luck.

Sadly the Windows Media Player will not allow it to be open twice.perhaps not the more recent versions, but the good ol' reliable Windows Media Player v.6.4 WILL allow you to do this (and, as mentioned, only one of the two will be using hardware acceleration).

You can install this version (It doesn't conflict with anything), which is "hidden" in your "Windows" folder, by doing the following:

Desktop>>Start>>Run Then type mplayer2.exe
