Hi,

Does anybody know about a work started on AVC Amd. 1 - SVC as an open video codec dev, like the great x264 initiative for AVC ?

SVC is supposed to be a future feature of AVC.

AVC Amendment 1, yes. For scalable video coding.
An hybrid AVC/MCTF video coder that allows to encode once, and provide several versions of a video in different spatial/temporal/quality modes.

My mistake. Amd 1 is FRext.
Should have said Amd 2 to be.... Let's say JSVM. It's more common.

@drmpeg: thanks, but i was talking more like something which looks like x264, but with svc. Like.... xJSVM :D....
It's almost ready. We are discussing profiles now....

According to link provided by Ron Amd 2 also isn't SVC - it is "New profiles for professional applications", which actually new High 444 predictive profile (which obsoletes finally old High 444 profile and all it's features including lossless coding implemented in x264).
Plus 4 new profiles are included - High 10 Intra, High 4:2:2 Intra, High 4:4:4 Intra, and CAVLC 4:4:4 Intra which "serve to enable applications demanding simple random-access and editing applications with low delay capability".

In July, 2004, the first amendment was added to this standard,
called the Fidelity Range Extensions (FRExt, Amendment 1), which demonstrates even further coding efficiency against
MPEG-2. Directly from MPEG website.

Hello mans,

SVC allows three forms of scalability:
• spatial (resolution)
• temporal (frequency)
• quality (SNR)

Sould i understand that tis new mode (new compression) allows to improve motion estimation in recovering and decovering areas of the video.

H264/AVC (standard) inferior H264 SVC ?

It's a little confusing. Actually, FRext is Corrigendum 1 to H.264 and was never published separately. See:

Abstract : Scalability at a bit-stream level is a desirable feature for many applications, for which video has to be simultaneously transmitted or stored with a variety of spatio-temporal resolutions are bit-rates. The Joint Video Team of the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group and the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group is currently standardizing a scalable extension of their video coding standard H.264 / MPEG-4 AVC. This SVC project has achieved a significant improvement in coding efficiency and the supportable degree of scalability relative to the scalable profiles of existing video coding standards. This paper gives an overview of the basic concepts for extending H.264 / MPEG-4 AVC towards a scalable video coding standard. The basic tools for providing temporal, spatial, and SNR scalability are described in detail and analyzed regarding their efficiency and complexity.
