fps of film in european cinemas

Do you ever find yourself reading something that at first makes you think "what fool wrote this?" but then it plants the seed of doubt in your mind until you start thinking "maybe it's me that's been in the wrong all this time?"

I always thought film was film, and played at 24 fps all over the world (well, apart from 8mm film which is 18fps I think). Do European film projectors really play film at 25 fps?

They don't.

european projectors sometimes are able to play back films at 25 fps, because some TV-productions are filmed at 25fps to match the PAL - standard.

Also this ppt. has some further mistakes.

I cannot believe that this shall be lecture. O_o !

lecturers can be quite behind the times...

for instance many multimedia lecturers still insist that DVDs are authored in Director (to the point where they nearly failed a guy i know who was studying while working as a DVD author!).

FWIW, scharfi is right - 24fps for feature films, 25fps for stuff that's not intended to play in cinemas (series, TVCs, music clips, etc).

of course, films are being shot in HD more lately, and even some in DV. the most successful australian movie of last year (except for happy feet of course) was shot on miniDV at 25fps.
