View Full Version : Drive works better with dvd-r?

Ok I don't want to be accused of breaking the rules and I don't think I am since I'm not asking a 'what's better' question. I had been using dvd+r since I started burning a few weeks ago. Recently I bought dvd-r (on accident much less) of the same brand and such that I have been buying. I had been having a lot of problems with lots of 'burn process failed' messages. I haven't gotten any since I started using the dvd-r, and granted it's only been about 5 of them so far but it had gotten to the point where it was happening at least every other time. I was about ready to return my drive thinking there was something wrong with it. Now my question is: Is there a legitimate reason why my burner would work with one and not the other? Or at least work better with one of them? The drive itself is a 16x lite-on internal dvd +/- r/rw. Is the greatest possibility that it is just a fluke of luck right now? Any insight would be appreciated.

See my response to your other post at:

It's oft'times a matter of media compatibility.

Since you appear to be new to burning, let me suggest that you burn at a speed LOWER than the maximum possible...

I have been burning at a lower speed (since your advice in a previous thread http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=122113 generally trying either 2x or 4x. That did seem to help some and I thank you.

But I guess I am a little confused, so are you saying that evne though my drive says it can handle both + and - media that it may not actually be compatible with both? Sorry I'm sure that is a very newbie question which I indeed am!

It's compatible with both DVD+R and DVD-R media, but not necessarily compatible with a specific brand (Actually, manufacturer's ID) in one or the other format.

Without getting into the sometimes confusing details of "why", let me simply suggest that you stick with the highest quality burnable media (They often are available at low sale prices) - Verbatim and Taiyo-Yuden ("T-Y") (I have found SONY media to also be consistently good)...
