hi guys,
i have some .mkv files that i would like to watch on a SAP
and so i would like to ask:
1. are there gonna be dvd players that can play mkvs
on the market soon ?
2. if not which prog is the best to convert them....?
*....supposing that the money doesnt matter...
*....if one doesnt want to lose much quality...
*....if one would like to keep the size at about
plusminus 20% of the original file....
*....if one would like to do it the fastest way possible...
3. does it make a difference in quality/time
if i convert them to avi or dvd or mp4
(supposing that all three formats are possible)?
thanks alot in advance

According to Betaboy, there's been a standalone player for mkv 'just around the corner' for years now... no announcement yet.
Depending on the codecs used, you may be able to convert them directly to mp4 or avi without recompressing, which is much, much faster (and no quality loss).
If not, you can use a tool like MeGUI to quickly re-encode them; depending on your computer's power it could take some time even with a reasonably fast profile. The faster you want it, the larger or lower quality the result will be. :\
In general converting to DVD is low quality (for the size), but the most compatible, next is avi with xvid+mp3 (sometimes ogm w/ vorbis), and some newer systems can use AVC/AAC which is the coolest option of all. You just have to pick a price point and see what's available in it.

ok im kinda confused.....convert/recompress or re-encode?
1.if i would like to convert mkv to avi what exactly would i have to do/use?
the xvid codec?
2. when i try to start MeGUI a window with a red X on the left pops up. it says:"application could not be initialized(0xc0000135). does that mean im missing some software on my computer?
3. when u talk about "newer systems" what exactly do u mean?
because from what i read so far i think its like this: mkv is a container just like avi. AVC/ACC is a video/audio codec that mainly uses the mp4-container. from what i also read AVC/ACC is not very compatible with the mkv container,so i dont see the connection here...
it would be nice if u,foxyshadis or someone else from ur great doom9 forum
could fill in the missing blanks here!
i guess u can tell im pretty bad with this stuff but i really would like to learn so please, anybody, help!
i would really appreciate it!
 :o
thanks a lot in advance
