I'm looking for a player that can play from a USB drive. And the player also has to be available to Canada.
So far all I've found is from Best Buy, the Philips DVP 5960.

Which kind of files do you wan't to play from USB? Most Xvid and DivX files play fine on the Philips, most MPEG2 files stutter, WMV files won't play.

many players are sold as "usb 2.0 "
In fact they are usb 1.1 BUT usb 2.0 compatible (meaning you can connect anything usb 2.0 but speed will be usb 1.1)
Best buy will probably fall in that category (Philips DVP 5960: I donīt know)
Max bitrate (from usb) ?: around 2000kbps (mpeg2 from vob are 8000 ĄĄ)
Many divx/xvid have "peaks" over that (and shutter like hell)

If there is a DVD player with a real USB 2.0 port, which plays MPEG2 files without stuttering, I'll buy it.

"high definition network dvd media player"
wouldnīt call that a "dvd player"
Probably expensive, and it is not on sale "worldwide"
(redbell DV HD100 on sale here in spain is similar and priced only 186€)
I thought we were talking about inexpensive dvd players w/ usb...
new question:
If there is an inexpensive (under 200€) DVD player with a real USB 2.0 port, which plays MPEG2 files without stuttering
blusens h50 -Removable HD (not provided with DVD)- sounds nice. but Iīm unsure about usb 2.0 (and price) and doubt itīs on sale outside spain...

ps: Donīt know if an url pointing to manufacturerīs home page is allowed ...or it will be considered spam
if itīs so please delete this post

Just in-case any of you are interested. New products from Ziova (formally Zensonic) are due to be launched in Europe soon (hopefully March/April). I'm currently beta testing the CS 505: -

Prices are yet to be fixed.....

That ziova looks quite nice, except for the display. Doesnt mention whether it can pull files off a seperate NAS server when a PC isnt in the Loop. The 5960 does seem to do the Biz for the price, although I have reservations about the size of hard disc (120,137 or 200, 500gb?) that can be read back from, its gotta be fat32 tho. How expensive ?? (no straight euro=pound or worse, dollar=pound prices please

It can also play DVD .ISO back-ups to (in navigate them in exactly the same way as the original DVD).

If you're beta tester SeeMoreDigital...and IF they listen to you...this will be a great player :)
Could you confirm if Xvid's 3Warp Point GMC and High-Quality CQM's (Soulhunter UHR, Didee's 6o9, Fox Home Entertainment) are supported ?
This looks like a great aquisition.
All the best,
Sharro

There's no support for Xvid's 3-warp-point GMC (chip-set manufacturers don't seem interested in providing base code support for it).
I'll see about the custom matrices and report back ;)

SeeMoreDigital; does it read ntfs partitions?Yes... Even a mixture of FAT32 and NTFS formatted partitions. It was the first player in its class to do so ;)

Woah. That's one amazing player. Seems like a great alternative to a media center PC. Now, the only question is the price...

Just tested Soulhunters v5 and v8 (HVS3) matrices. And they play perfectly too :)
Don't know the prices of the Ziova CS505 or CS510 yet....

It has everything but AVC. ;_; At least the WMV folks will be quite happy.
Have you tested with major bitrate spikes? I mean, Fox and Soulhunter's should produce some of those, but it'd be nice to know that it doesn't choke with really high bitrate streams.

Have you tested with major bitrate spikes? I mean, Fox and Soulhunter's should produce some of those, but it'd be nice to know that it doesn't choke with really high bitrate streams.Using a USB2 pen-drive I have tested high-def (1920x816) MPEG-4 SP encoded at an average bit-rate of around 10Mbps and spikes of beyond 20Mbps..... During playback not a single frame was dropped.
Here's what MP4box says about the video stream: MPEG-4 Config
Visual Stream - ObjectTypeIndication 0x20
MPEG-4 Visual Size 1920 x 816 - Simple Profile @ Level 3
Pixel Aspect Ratio 1:1 - Indicated track size 1920 x 816
Decoding Buffer size 212073 - Average bitrate 9760 kbps - Max Bitrate 23694 kbps
When the Z500 is hooked up to your home network and files served from a PC via hard-wired ethernet network (as opposed to wireless), you can play MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 at very high average bit-rates. Around 21Mbps via an SMB connection and upto 35Mbps via an UPnP connection.

And of course, will it see a US release? If the price is right, I'd love to get my hands on one of these. I might have to rethink those PS3 purchases (dual-boot Linux and use as a Media Center PC).
