Capture s-vhs from vhs tape

I have made a capture from vhs tape in s-vhs format.

All frame's exhibit a pattern of cross lines.

Please, how can i remove them ?.

Hi,

The problem seems an interference pattern due to bad-grounded wires. Long time ago I read the correct maner to connect s-vhs to capture card and, indeed, was a hard working task. Alas, I cant remember the url of the page. If you cant enhance your capture method, try with avisynth filter fft3dfilter. There is a more sophisticated method that involves reapeating capture and averagin the two obtained clips.

There are Avisynth filters to battle against interference noise, Fizick's DeFreq and vcmohan's FanFilter are two off the top of my head.

That's interlace, try Avisynth or VirtualDub's de-interlace filter, I'm using Donald Graft's Vdub Smart DeInterlace filter:

I think he means the diagonal lines, most evident on the car.

alfixdvd, you said you captured from VHS tape in S-VHS format - how did you connect your tape player to your capture card? I've seen problems like that when mixing up composite and s-video connections.

With a s-vhs video to scart adapter.

Right... it does sound like the trouble I had. The capture card thinks it's getting s-video, but it's only getting composite video from your VHS player (unless I've misunderstood and you actually have an S-VHS player playing an S-VHS tape). Somehow it does manage to pick up some of the colour information that's present in the composite signal, but obviously it doesn't put it together properly.

You may be able to explain to your capture card that you're only feeding it composite video, or you may need a convertor - capture cards usually come with one, in my experience.

With a SVHS player you will get S-Video output also when playing normal VHS tapes. I have a JVC HR-S 7700 and capture VHS tapes through S-VIDEO cable to my capture card.

However even if there is a slightly better quality with S-VIDEO it is not a big difference when playing VHS-tapes. I recommend to connect via composite cable if your VCR does not have S-VIDEO connector.

By the way, my VCR has an option to record in SVHS ET format on normal VHS tapes but then I get quite noisy picture so I prefer the quality from VHS (lower resolution but much less noise). I think in order to use the SVHS-ET the VHS tapes must be of very good quality. Perhaps this is what you have done, recorded in SVHS mode to a lower quality VHS tape?

the cross pattern is caused due to a bug in the capture driver.

just play around with the input settings like Composite/S-Video and Tuner.
hopefully the problem dissolves after a few alternations between these inputs.

hopefully the problem dissolves after a few alternations between these inputs.In case of a box like Canopus ADVC300 (which outputs DV), what would be the capture driver's problem? I don't think that would be the cause here. Looks to me like the diagonal stripes already exist on tape, one needs to filter them out in post.

this image looks like crosstalk of the chroma channel to the luma channel.
this high frequency luminance-pattern cannot be recorded on a (S-)VHS tape.

this could also be a bug in the saa-chip that is used by the canopus-box.
again: please try swichting from composite to s-video and back, until the problem is gone.

you can try to reduce the crosstalk after capturing of cause with brute force blurring in AVISynth:
