It almost went past me but the latest version of LAME is not beta anymore!!
Look it up in the history. The new --alt modes seem the biggest improvement. Among other stuff, they toggle some of the experimental settings on/off automatically.

Oh, if only the 'search'-function of the board was working again, I'd have checked for 'LAME'-threads beforehand... :o
