WinDVD8 Player Problem

Hi - Everything works fine when playing DVD discs.
However, my main interest in using WinDVD8 is in playing files from the Hard Drive.
When playing files from the Hard Drive, everything works OK with mpeg2 files but, when playing AVI files (Divx/Xvid), whilst the files play OK, options such as Fast Forward/Reverse and Bookmark/Capture are greyed out and inoperable.
Is there a fix for this problem?

Running Windows XP Home with Sevice Pack2.

For as far back as I can remember (I believe WinDVD first started playing .AVIs with version 3.0), WinDVD has treated .AVIs as a "stepchild" - Play/Pause/Stop and nothing else...
