View Full Version : Philips DVP5960, MPEG2 files (*.mpg) & Aspect Ratio...?

I just found out that my Philips DVP5960 stretches 4:3 MPEG2 files (*.mpg) to 16:9 on my 16:9 TV set. AR signalling works fine with 4:3 and 16:9 AVI files (DivX, XviD).
Is this a known and/or unsolvable problem?

Hi!
Have you tried changing the display settings of either your player or television?

Changing the display settings of my television works, thanks!
But fiddling with the display settings constantly when watching several short clips in a row (e. g. music videos) with different aspect ratios (4:3 and 16:9) is not too much fun at all.

Hehe! :-) I don't create them, I just record them from televison.
Okay, new question:
Is there any DVD player which can handle apect ratio signalling of MPEG2 files (not authored as DVD)?

A bit OT, but since you own a DVP5960...
I am considering buying this player or the DVP5140 as a replacement to my aged Philips DVP642. From what I can gather, the only major difference between the DVP5960 and the DVP5140 is the DVP5960 has a USB port for mass storage devices. I'm not concerned about connectivity as I only need the players to have component video and composite audio.
My question is, what USB devices do this player support? I've got several USB flash drives and hard drives, some with their own power, some without. I think I saw a thread before on what drives work and what don't, but now, I can't seem to find it.
Mostly, I need to know if it will work with a 500GB Western Digital My Book (FAT32, with own power supply) which I use as the primary storage for my media. I've also got a 60GB Western Digital Passport (FAT32, USB-powered) which I use for on-the-go storage but getting that to work is not as important since I eventually transfer the contents of that drive to the 500GB one.
So, will it work with my setup? I'm assuming it won't work with NTFS drives? Also, is there a limit to the storage capacity it will recognize?
Thanks!

Hi
Here's a weblink that gives you a list of what USB drives the Phillips DVP5960 supports:-
http://www.phunkyfish.com/article/4/philips-dvp-596012
Only works with FAT32.
If you want to use an external hard disk with the 5960 you'll need to follow these rules:
1. Make sure it has an external power connection, it must be powered externally before connecting to the player
2. Drive must be formatted as FAT32 (see formatters below!)
3. FAT32 partition must be primary.
Windows can't format a drive larger than 32GB as FAT32 but these 2 tools will allow you to do it. Both tools are free.
* Swissknife - GUI
* fat32format - Command Line
Compatible USB Flash Drives/Keys
The USB port on the 5960 doesn't deliver a whole lot of power. This unfortunately mean that quite a flash drives don't work on the player. Here's the most up to date list I have of what work's and what doesn't:
Good List:
* ACP-EP 2GB USB Flash Drive
* ACP-EP Memory 2GB Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Mini Flash Drive
* Dane-Elec zMate Pen 2GB
* Emprex 2GB
* Foto Source USB2.0Plus 1GB (made by Shikatronics)
* iPod 4G 20GB
* Kingston 1GB Data Traveler Elite
* Kingston 2GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive
* Kingston U3 DataTraveller Samrt USB Flash Drive 2GB (Need to remove U3, visit U3.com/uninstall)
* LG 2GB
* Memorex Travel Drive U3 1GB mini-drives
* Memorex 8GB Mega Travel Drive
* OCZ Rally 1GB
* pny Attache 1GB preformated as fat
* Sandisk Cruzer Micro U3 1GB
* Sandisk Cruzer Micro U3 4GB (with retractable USB)
* SimpleTech 1 GB
* SimpleTech 2GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive
* Sumvision SV-U88 1GB
* Sumvision SV-U88 4GB
* Transcend JetFlash 120 4GB
* Transcend JetFlash 2A 4GB
Bad List:
* Corsair Flash Voyager (Power consumption too high, I think!)
* Disgo USB Drives
I have one of these and apart from problems with not being able to ff/rw at faster than x4 through USB and short file names through USB its excellent for £55!

Strange. My 5960/12 fast forwards AVIs through USB with x32.

Thanks for the post. I already found the thread I was looking for. Apparently, it wasn't here on doom9, it was on videohelp so I really wouldn't have found it here no matter what search I try. :p

Strange. My 5960/12 fast forwards AVIs through USB with x32.
Is that with a USB pendrive or Hard drive?
I use a pendrive Sumvision 1Gb and 4Gb and it will do x4 and you can see it skipping through. At x32 it freezes and although it does move forward it is actually quicker to stay at x4. If your on a USB HD maybe it makes a difference. If your on a pendrive then maybe the manufacturer makes a difference not only as to whether it will accept it but also the ff/rw rate.
edit
Thinking about this even when using a DVD-RW I am not even given a x32 option the quickest is x16. What firmware are you using?
