Something like the Fraps-codec?

Hi,

is there a codec that is both very fast and creates relative small files (like the Fraps-codec). A codec to export footage from the editing software to e.g. VirtualDub or MeGUI.

You could use XviD with really fast settings. I think there are some real-time profiles.

Define "relatively small". Fraps is enormous and lossless, if you want that you can use huffyuv or lagarith. The only thing it's small compared to is uncompressed. Otherwise, DV or specially modified xvid (see the "editing profile" in the presets thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=119399)) are fast, rather smaller, and minimally lossy.

Relatively small: with a bitrate like a DV footage (about 30 mbps) or even less. Fraps creates smaller files than HuffYUV - my footage (640x480) had a bitrate at 32 mbps when using Fraps, 52 mbps when using HuffYUV and 46 mbps when using the lossless MJPEG codec. Furthermore, Fraps is unbeatable fast.

I also tried lossy MJPEG and it is both fast and provides good quality at an acceptable bitrate - I downloaded this one (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Midvid_JPEG_Video_Codec.htm) and at 94% quality it provides visual actually lossless quality (the created file has a bitrate at about 20 mbps). The other MJPEG codec contained in ffdshow is quite good too and even faster :)

Curiously, Xvid isn't really fast :/ With x264 I get about 20 fps, with Xvid about 25 and with MJPEG 40-60 fps.

But if you have any other suggestions, just post them ;)

1. Which MJPEG implementation could you recommend me?
2. Is there a free MJPEG-2000 implementation?
