Been doing XVID for a while and wanted to try out x264. Built a new install of XPSP2, and followed the x264 Guide - downloaded GK 0.35.0, Codec Pack 1.9 - got stuck at the x264 for a while as the link takes you to the x264 site, and you download x264.exe, which is a DOS executable?

After messing around looking for a codec to install, went thru x264's site looking for info, and somewhere I read that by installing "megui" the x264 codec would be installed. Well, I installed megui and the x264 codec was installed (at least I think it was), as on starting megui, it went and grabbed all the latest builds.

Now's the interesting part - I started GK as per the guide and went to the options tab to configure x264. Clicking the "First Pass" or the "Second Pass" buttons under x264 do not bring up anything. Clicking the same buttons under DivX or XVID - brings up those respective configuration screens. I went back to the bitrate tab - selected the x264 codec (logo switches to x264) then went back to Options. Same result - Cannot bring up the x264 confiiguration screens. What am I missing / doing wrong? My guess is that the x264 codec has not been installed. How do I get to install / verify this? Please help. Thanks in advance.

You need the x264 VfW build.

X264 is no longer developed as VfW version, so there's no installer any more. The encoder is a single executable file that works e.g. with command line interface. That's how meGUI works.

The last working VfW version, which happens to work well with GK, can be grabbed from
here... (http://deaththesheep.uni.cc/)
I wouldn't recommend the version with "decoder", if you use ffdshow or any other H.264 decoder.

Well, it seems our good Kurtnoise is still working on the most recent x264-VfW versions. :D
