MPG file header missing

I've used restream and mpeg-corrector but none of them can build my mpg's header file. I'm pretty sure that the file's header has been altered because I've copied it from a scratchy old cd. I don't mind missing some of the first megabytes, I just want to see my file. Has anyone got any idea?

Try putting it through VCDGear with the Fix MPEG Errors option checked. Besides, which player did you try to play the file and fail? VLC Media Player usually play most b0rked files.

Thanks for your response. However I've tried both of them but it seems that it doesn't like it at all.

VideoLan doesn't play the file.
VCDGear processes it and at the end it doesn't make any file at all.

I'm sure that only the beginning is crippled as the file was copied with difficulty only at the beginning. Can I cut mpg files when the don;t have the header? I've also tried Mpgcut or something but it doesn;t accept my video file. Darn...

hmm, try loading it to VirtualDubMoD, it will try to reconstruct the missing index (and also tell you what's wrong with the file). Also try MPEG Header Repair (http://public.seconis.net/download/HeaderRepairEn.zip) & MPEG-Corrector (http://www.videohelp.com/download/MPEG-Corrector.zip). If nothing works, you can upload the file somewhere if it ain't too big to upload and I can try and poke around, but no promises.

Thank you for all your effort and interest in solving my problem. I got so frustrated I deleted the file and threw away the cd...

It was about 678Mb so I couldn't upload it.

By the way, I had tried to reconstruct the index through VirtualDubMod but it didn;t work. I was left with a 0Mb file...

Sorry, I just got around to reading your post - and you've already thrown away the CD.

For future reference, try using the "almost magical" freeware program "ISOPuzzle", far and away the most successful disc recovery program I've come across ;>}
