View Full Version : Codec problems

I have a large library of .avi files (divs and xvid). I am in the process of encoding them to dvd to play on a standalone player. I am using virtualdub, dvdsanta, vegas 7, and dvd architect 4. Some files are fine, others are not recognized by any or all of the above. I have some codecs (divx and xvid), but audio codecs are a real problem. If I try to compress or decompress audio tracks, I get a message that I do not have the correct codec. I would like to get ideas of which audio codec pack would be the best to install and use for general purposes. I know that in virtualdub, only a few of the mp3 formats are available.
I am using a VAIO rz54g desktop with windows xp media center edition.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks much.

Hi!
1) You should be able to use the same audio codecs that you used when you created the .AVIs
2) If you didn't maintain a log of which .AVI uses what audio codec, load the .AVI into GSpot to refresh your memory

I appreciate the thought, setarip, but even if I remembered what codecs were used, I no longer have them. I just want to know a good audio codec for divx and xvid and where I can locate them.
Thanks

For starters, DivX and Xvid are both video codecs. As far as decoding the audio in your .avi files, you need to have the appropriate audio codec installed. The only codec pack I trust is the Gordian Knot codec pack available from the downloads section, which you can access from the main www.doom9.org page. It should contain everything you need except the Lame MP3 encoder, which is also available there.

Thank you for the info. I am trying the Gordian Knot pack.
I appreciate the help.

I'd suggest that you should install ONLY those codecs that you determine you actually need, as opposed to installing a "pack" of any kind.
And, yet again, you can determine which codecs are needed by using GSpot with your original .AVIs...

would save a ton of time and hassle to just buy a standalone divx/xvid player. :P
