View Full Version : Is it possible - HD-DVD to DIVX or XVID??

Hi all,
I am looking to get an XBOX HD-DVD drive, which I would like to hook up to XP to try and rip some HD-DVD discs (for personal use of course). I have tried to trawl through doom9 and some other sites, but cannot get a definitive answer on the following question. Can you copy an HD-DVD and make it into a 720P DIVX (or XVID) file?
I can see that it is possible to rip the disc using imgburn to a hard drive. Does this create files or a disc image? Also I know there are some programs that can play these, but my pc is not good enough to play 1080 videos (but ok for 720). But from here, I am kinda stumped..
Any help (or link to a guide) would be greatly appreciated
Many Thanks

Yes, of course, but you can't just slam it into AutoGK and expect it to work. The tools are still pretty labor and HD space intensive, and the encoding will take ages, but the forum wouldn't be abuzz if you couldn't do anything more than just play the video.
As soon as you can get the video into avisynth or any kind of raw form, it can be encoded into anything you want, any way you want.

thanks for that. I am only really wanting to try it as an experiment, just to see how hard it is.
Anyway does anyone know of a good guide to achieving hd divx files from hd-dvd

If you already know how to encode to divx you can encode to an HD resolution with divx the exact same way. There's no need of a special guide. The only difference between the two is you are working with a larger resolution and will probably need a higher bitrate for the HD version.

But doesn't HD-DVD output EVO files rather than VOB like DVD?
If that is the case what is the best program to convert EVO into say MPEG2? (if that is the best course of action)

Why would you be converting it to mpeg2? Aren't you wanting divx?

his not saying he wants to but he is saying if its the best source

Which is why I was asking why he'd want to do that at all.

I had thought that the best way of converting from EVO files to DIVX was by first converting to a format like MPEG2.
This is my first go at converting from HD-DVD to DIVX, and at the moment I am not getting much help from the forums. I cannot find a guide (newbie or advanced) to help me with this convertion. I try and put questions on the forum, but it is not helping when I get "why are you doing it that way" answers. The bottom line is I don't know what to do - therefore I am asking guys in the "Newbie" forum what to do.
At the moment I have a ripped ISO of an HD-DVD film on my hard drive with the latest imgburn. I also have a trial version of WinDVD8. If I load the ISO in a virtual drive, and play the EVO's seperatly, the WinDVD window seems to go to the right size, but it is black. I have also tried the HD-DVD Demuxer 1.2 to convert the EVO file to an m2v file, but this aswell is black when playing. I presume the VC1 codec is loaded. Is there any way of checking?
Am I right in thinking that since I have ripped the disc to my hard drive, all the protection has gone? As I do not have a HDCP complaint graphics card (6600 LE), this wouldn't be the reason for the black screen could it. FYI my card is hooked up to my monitor via DVI
My main goal is not to play the HD-DVD files, as my machine is not good enough, but to convert to a 720 DIVX file (which my machine can play)
Thank you in advance.

Almost everything known about how to work with EVOBs is in this forum:
http://forum.doom9.org/forumdisplay.php?f=74
There has been a grand total of two weeks of development time on tools and methods. I know you're impatient, but it might be a while before it can be done simply. Using Scenarist HD seems to be the most successful method, but there's just no magic bullet at this point.
Converting it to mpeg2 would be just as hard as converting it to divx, so I don't know where that assumption came from.

Have you actually decrypted your .EVO files yet? That should be the first step, and I don't think programs like imgburn can do that. You would first need BackupHDDVD or AnyDVD HD so that you will have decrypted .EVO files. From there, getting these files into AVI Synth and having the sound stay in sync is probably where most of the development is currently taking place. Once this is done, the proceedure should be just like anything else, and you can then encode it to DivX, XviD, MPEG2 (??), etc.

thanks Matt,
When i ripped the disc, I did not have AnyDVDHD installed. I just assumed that when ImgBurn ripped it without any error messages, I thought that like with dvd it had got rid of the protection, anyway will know for next time... will this be the reason why when i play the files they are black?
thank you

depending on the player you are using, yes, this is probably why the image is blank.
Almost all HD-DVD's are encrypted and tend not to play on non-HDCP compliant systems.
So, as mentioned above, 1st step is to use BackupHDDVD. Then you'd worry about encoding the resulting files to other formats...
