View Full Version : AC3 Dialogue Normalization ... how to??

hello there...my first post...so forgive me for mistakes...if any!

i have read samjoe's post "forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=56020"

and have understood it too...

except for the dialogue normalization part.....
it is said that you have to select a part of your wave file in sound forge(cooledit etc..) to be encoded which represents the refence dialouge(without any music or special effects) and find it's RMS value.

but when i load my wav file in sound forge .... i am confused because i do not know which dialouge to take as reference....
as different dialouge selections in the wav file have different RMS values as expected...

like some parts have rms value of -24Db while others have -29Db and others have -32dB..

so i am confused as to what value should i take for dialouge normalization for encoding this wav to AC3.

Take an average value. Maybe -28 dB?
Its not important the exact value but the range.

Thanks tebasuna51! :) will try as you suggested and see the difference in the sound...thanks!

hi tebasuna51 !!

it worked! :)
i loaded the wav file in sound forge and found out the RMS values of dialouges from about 10 different sections of the wav.
the average of the 10 values turned out to be -27Db.
i reencoded the wav to AC3 this time putting the value of dialouge normalization as -27Db.

The resulting AC3 sounded clearly better than the one i had encoded before(with dial.norm as -19Db).

The new one sounded richer...while the previous one was a little flat.

Thanks for help! :thanks:
