Hi,

my audio sultion on windows is foobar2000, as for video I use mplayer. Now I stumbled across ffdshow. As far as I understand, its a decoder collection which will work e.g. internally in windows media player, but I didn't understand yet how that works.

I've got a m4v video file and opened that one with WMP9 and I realized, ffdshow is being loaded and works fine.

Other video codec files which I load with WMP (e.g. .wmv) are not associated with ffdshow. How can I associate those file typed to use ffdshow as well?

Another thing: I tried to open a musepack (mpc) audio file in WMP, but it didn't load ffdshow.

So how are those associations done?

My goal is to give computer newbies like my relatives a possibility to watch and listen to many formats in their beloved WMP *puke* ;)

Open the ffdshow configuration utility.

With ffdshow you go through the codec list and choose the decoder for each format. It's not necessarily an association with ffdshow, but making sure the player you use does not decode those formats.

But it doesn't work. I've got a "Windows Media Video V8" video file. In ffdshow options, I've set WMV1/7, WMV2/8, WMV3/9 to libavcodec decoder.

Then I start WMP with my wmv8 file: No ffdshow there, no ffdshow icons in the tray (I have NOT turned the tray option off).

Install the Windows Media Format runtimes. That contains the Windows Media decoders you need to play WMV files.
