the scrolling end-titles flicker

I am using Xvid 1.1.0 Koepi's build. I have selected one of the default profiles (HDTV). When rendering the scolling end-titles and there is a substantial flickering.

I am including two samples. The first is with Xvid and the second with WMV9 (WinXP Pro SP1 default codec). WMV9 doesn't present this problem.
Take a look:

What can I do to prevent this flickering?

The credits will need different encoding from the rest of the video, which cannot be determined without a sample of the source.

Whatever tools you have used for encoding: The sources have been treated differently:

- When feeding the source to WMV9 encoding, it was done correctly (no deinterlacing, the source is progressive).

- When feeding the source to XviD encoding, the progressive source has been deinterlaced by discarding one field & doubling the height of the kept field.

It's the field discarding that is causing the flickering. Xvid has nothing to do with that - the error happened before Xvid did even get its fingers on the source. ;)


Please describe the way how you did those encodings - which tools/applications are used, settings within those, etc.

The source is a PNG which scrolls through time.

I am using Sony Vegas 6.0d. Both videos were rendered using this program, the same source material, and the same settings.

After I read what you wrote, I checked to see what settings that I had. There was something called "Field order" and was set to "lower field first". I set it to "None (progressive scan)" and I rendered again. Unfortunatelly, that didn't fix the problem.

There is an option "Deinterlace method" which has 3 options:
1. None
2. Blend fields
3. Interpolate fields

I tried them all 3, while keeping "Field order" to "None". Again, nothing changed. I have included a screenshot of the rendering settings of Sony Vegas.

What do I try next?

Field order has nothing to do with this. And since I don't have Vegas, I can't tell much about what settings it has, and which do what exactly.

But this I can tell you for sure: in your Xvid sample, there is one field missing, period. The actual content is the other field that has been upsized to full height. Trust my eyes here.

*How* you did get there - I've no clue.

Again: this is not-at-all a problem with Xvid.
