According to the site's tech info, and based on trying to do it anyway in MKVToolnix, MKV files don't support SRT subs with position information. AVIMux-GUI will import it, but I don't know if it keeps the data. Will MKV/MKVToolnix support this soon, and should i use SSA until then?

As far as I know srt doesn't support position information.

SRT doesn't really support anything beyond a start and stop time. If you want more, you should use ASS or some other sub format.

The version of SubRip I'm using (1.50 beta 3) can add position information to the SRT file in the form of X and Y coordinates after the start/stop times.
Does MKV/MKVToolnix support ASS, and what tool(s) should I use to convert SUB to ASS?

And when you play files with such SRTs, are position informations correctly used ?

No, all the software I've tried just ignores it. But I'd like to import it anyways, in case something in the future supports it.

Lol! They just change the format like that... Really funny.

No, mkvmerge doesn't support this. And I couldn't put such stuff into S_TEXT/SRT tracks with the position information because NO software would interprete it correctly. I'd have to use a new CodecID which no splitter/player would have support for right away.

I just love random format changes.

Use SSA/ASS, please.

Why don't you convert the srt into ssa using Subtitles Workshop. This is done in few seconds. Before saving the ssa, press Shift+Alt+L and set your ssa desired settings. I'm using arial narrow, bold, 25, distance from bottom 12, 2 pixels outline. With this settings done, always when you'll convert a subtitles file into ssa will keep this values.
