h.264 to divx?

I have some tv shows encoded in h.264 and in a mp4 container. I would like to convert these to divx or xvid for my stand-alone player (Philips DVP5140). Any good advice or a guide to follow?

I haven't had much luck with google.

Easiest way, use Dr. DivX

I've found that when trying to re-encode h264 .mkv files then Dr. DivX always keeps crashing on me.

I'm using SUPER when doing that :)

You can use Avidemux (http://prdownload.berlios.de/avidemux/avidemux_2.3.0_plus_win32.zip) to do that :D
It supports MP4 as input, has built-in H.264 decoder plus built-in XviD encoder.
The application itself looks pretty much like VirtualDub.

Just open your MP4 file (will open directly), select "XviD" encoder, maybe edit XviD settings and save as AVI file.
Might be necessary to keep certain XviD settings disabled to make it play properly on a stand-alone player.

Well, there ARE such things as TV shows on DVD, you know. If he has the DVDs I'd re-rip and encode. If they're captures, then he could do as you suggested.

I'm sure he meant that it is captured from TV.
If it was already on DVD, there would be no need to convert it for stand-alone players.
Just put the DVD inside and watch :D
