VLC player 0.8.6a

I am using Microsoft Vista Ultimate RC1 build 5600.

I had an older version of VLC, where the volume bar was coloured green. I don't know which version it was...sorry.

I downloaded the latest version, which uninstalled the old one. Now it does NOT play my DVD folder files...NOR any .avi...it only shows a black screen. Also, no sound.

What can I do to make it work? Thanks so much - Farooq

I had the same problem, and read somewhere it's the missing OpenGL functionality of Vista that causes it. You can change VLC's output method quite easily, and for me that worked.


In VLC, go to "Settings" -> "Preferences" -> "Video" -> "Output Modules".
Now check the box "Advanced Options" in the lower right corner.
From the "Video Output Module" drop-down, select "Windows GDI video output".
Close and restart VLC.

There is no missing OpenGL functionality in Vista, Vista has support for v1.1 build-in. If you need support for an higher version you'll need a Vista compatible OpenGL ICD, which usually ships with your videocard driver.

Windows GDI video output does not support subtitles.

Okay, my bad. I just repeated what I'd read somewhere as a comment and thought to be true, since the GDI thing worked for my videos.

So far, I haven't noticed the missing subs, but then I use ZP for most of my videos anyway. The GDI setting might be a workaround solution for those of us who experience the vlc0.8.6a probs though.

Does anyone know whether these problems are actually related to the OpenGL support then? I wouldn't be surprised if it's my graphics drivers that are messed up. ATI doesn't seem to put much effort into the 9600 part of their drivers.

On another note: Setting the output module to "DirectX video" also kinda works, but Vista has to reset my color scheme every time I play a video then.

Yes with the older version, I had the same thing...resetting the colour scheme. As of now, I put 8.5 back...it works fine. I'll wait til I get the full version of Vista Premium. Tx all for the help. By the way, I didn't try your fix...Eisprinz...aber danke :)
