hey thanx for the BIG tip. if I didn't know that I would've wasted a DVDR. what about the audio bitrate? I have a couple of AVI files which had VBR mp3s of 119 kbps and 191 kbps. I could use Besweet to re-encode the mp3s to CBR @ 128 kbps and 192 kbps, respectively, then merge them back into the original AVI file whilst disabling the original VBR mp3 and "Direct-Stream" copy the new avi file. So my question is:
Does it have to be exactly 128 kbps or 192 kbps for instance? :)

Hi!
Yes...
So it will play either 44100 Hz or 48000 Hz. Thanks a lot. :)

Hi,
Better re-encode next lower CBR step available 119 -> 112 and 192 -> 192 or 176.

Yes and the MP3 encoders will propose only multiple of 16 up to 192 and multiple of 32 over 192.
There is a tool somewhere that takes a MP3 VBR and makes a CBR without re-encoding or re-encoding only some parts but I just cannnot get the references; ask in the audio section if interested, maybe someone will give a link :)

It's not cut-and-dried, though, some advanced players can read and seek with vbr just fine. It's worth a DVD-RW or CD-RW to find out the capabilities of your system. SMD has an ISO with various formats around... er, somewhere. The sticky also lists the capabilities of most devices on the market, broken down by chipset.

apparently my player supports MP3 VBR, at least according to video help.com's user reviews. Based on that, I'm assuming the AVI files w/ MP3 VBR will play just fine. I'll test it later and report back.

I have three different chipset based players that all play VBR, but, it's a pain in the a*s, just a bit more hassle to work with, especially when it comes to cutting or joining and converting to MPEG with certain programs. It's just a lot safer or less hassle to work with CBR.

OT: Don't say you're a bad mod; you're a good mod until you turn bad which (I think) will not happen soon :D /OT

LOL. A few days ago I recorded many AVI files, without knowing they had MP3 VBRs (and CBRs) and I just checked all of 'em --- THEY WORKED FLAWLESSLY! I should've thought about it earlier instead of dragging out this discussion into MP3. Must be the THC.
Anyway, I've still yet to check if my newly created .DIVX files will still work properly with embeded subtitles and mp3 VBRs. I'll report back on that later.
