How to re-encode xvid to divx video for stand alone

Have several videos that do not play on my divx certified player, how do I fix these? they are currently xvid, however, some xvid encodes do play on this unit

Provided your Xvid sources do not contain GMC, they should play on high spec stand-alone player.

Sufficed to say, many "low spec" players can't handle "high spec" implementations such as Qpel or B-frames either. Meaning, even if you generated DivX encodes using these implementaions, they might not run on your player either :eek:

So what make/model of stand-alone player you have?

Use AutoGK. After loading the avi, press Ctrl+F9 and enable "Ess support".

It be a DVD player/recorder combo.... with support for MPEG-4.

Sadly, most player/recorder combos have pretty poor MPEG-4 support, usually offering "simple profile" compatibility only - Meaning no support for GMC, Q-Pel, custom matrices and quite often, B-frames!

Just to make things clear though. The player "up-scales" std-def resolution sources to high-def resolutions. It can not play "native" high-def resolution sources.

You are, of course, completely correct on the upscaling note. I've seen the newer 981 in action in 1080p, and it's really... really impressive for an upscaled image.

Use AVI FourCC Changer to change from XVID---->DIVX.
Maybe it will work.

Re-encode Xvid to DivX movie, you should use AutoGK. By choosing Advanced Settings Codec from Xvid to DivX, you can re-encode this one. Additionally, you can mux you subtitles (format in *.ssa or *.srt) into movie, by pressing Ctrl-F8 after browsing movie file. Finally, you get movie in DivX codec that can played on all STD with DivX Certificated. I am used AutoGK to do this with good results. Have a nice works..

I've used WinAVI 7.7 with excellent results. Converted a whole TV series originally encoded as XViD to DivX using standard (1-pass q4) settings, all with just a few clicks, and no noticable quality degredation. The advantage here over AutoGK is you can select multiple source files if they are all in the same location, and they all run thru the encoder using the same settings.

It sometimes falters on larger files, however - I once tried to splice together 2 1-hour parts of a movie and it crashed about 75% of the way through - but for multiple 30-minute videos, output 1-for-1, it works great!

I think that what should be said in the first place is, that converting XviD to DivX is a nonsense. There is no DivX format (except of the DIVX container) and no XviD format. To understand it: DivX and XviD are just two codecs (encoders) for the same format - MPEG-4 ASP. Like CCE and Canopus ProCoder are two different encoders for MPEG-2.

So there is no need/no use in converting XviD to DivX. There are 2 possibilities:

1) You XviD movie uses GMC/b-frames/q-pel etc. and your player doesn't support ASP profile. The only thing you can do now is to reencode the movie (using XviD or any other MPEG-4 ASP codec) in VirtualDub. It takes a long time and it's quite a big quality loss. But you can't do anything about it. Before encoding you movie, you should create some short samples and check what ASP options your player supports (don't even try GMC, almost no players support it). 2) Your player (SONY for example) is blocking XviD codec. Just change fourCC of your AVI to DX50 with Nic's FourCC Changer (comes with Koepi's XviD codec installation).

I agree with you about SONY STD is bloking Xvid codec. And more, it coudn't play DivX movie with external subtiltles file. Once, I tried change fourCC from Xvid -> DX50, but SONY STD can not play AVI file normally. It stopped suddently..So I must use AutoGK to re-encode movie with external subtitles..

Many Sony players are fitted with their own chip-set designs... I suggest if you want their chip-sets to support Xvid 4CC's you bombard them with e-mails requesting such!

As Vlada mentioned. Regardless of whether you generate encodes with Xvid or DivX.... it's all MPEG-4 and as such must comply with the MPEG-4 ISO spec

I agree with you about SONY STD is bloking Xvid codec.
Buy another player (about 50 euro) and forgot about sony. You'll save a lot of time. Try to buy one with Mediatek chipset which had an already modified firmware for better subtitles.
