Sony Vegas and nVidia WDM capture?

I have tried everything to capture from an analog source, either S-video or composite.
I tried VirtualDub and VD mod and I don'thave the best results. various codecs crack constantly and on my other machine I get a spectacular white bar accross the screen.

Everything works fine with MS Movie maker, but I can't capture at the correct NTSC resolution - 720x480. The video quality is mediocre as it is, I don't want to make it worse by losing resolution.

So I have Sony Vegas 7.0 and I go to FILE, the Capture video choose DV and I immegiately get the error "The device nVidida WDM video capture (universal)" could not be opened. Please make sure it is turned on and not in use by another application or user.
I rebooted, reinstalled drivers - same thing.

Any ideas?

Have you tried VirtualVCR?
Make sure to choose Smart Tee pin filter for preview to allow 720x480 preview.

VirtualVCR won't capture in 720 x 480. I set it to captura at that, but the resulting video was only 640x480.
I don't understand.

Are you sure your card supports 720x480?
If it's in the card specs, then it should work.

Yes, I've done it with virtualdub, but I get that big white line accross it.

I tried another app from a company called iu labs. Worked pretty well and did 720x480. Costs about $30, I may or may not spring for it.
But I'm probably going to get a Digital 8 camera off ebay and use that to digitize my old 8mm tapes.

With the preview of iu labs' software I got the white line when I fast forwarded it. I wonder if the video cars is shotty and triggering some sort of macrovision reaction. This Card is older than the one on the more powerful PC with a newer card.
BUT, on the newer one I can't get Huffyuv to work correctlty with the newest versionof VD.
Its starting to get to me.
The huffyuv install - blew up. Install failed under admin. But with an older version of VD it worked.
I downloaded and installed AVIdemix. I capped a file in undcompressed format. I tried to convert it to huffyuv but when I tried to play it - nothing. no video,

So suppose I get a D8 camcorder and firewire it to my PC. Then what? How to I compress it to Huffyuv?

errm why would you wanna "compress" it to huffyuv?
huffyuv is a (almost) uncompressed format. you wanna
capture as huffyuv, then compress to mpeg4 or 2.

if you capture to another format, then you dont need huffyuv
at all. just convert to the format you want in the end.
i myself capture as xvid on the fly with PCM audio, then do
a direct stream copy in vdub for the video and compress the
audio to mp3. this way i wont loose picture quality either, but
you need to know how long the vid will be and adjust the bitrate
prior to capturing.
also you can only do 1-pass encoding and in my case only at
a resolution of 352x288 instead of 720x576.
i choose the little lesser quality over the hassle of having a 40
gig file and a 3 hour encoding time for a 2gig file and a 10 minute encoding time lol.
imho, its analog to digital anyway, so it wont be great no matter
what you do.
