What NTSC ColorSpace (RGB/YUY2) for CCE Basic?

Hi all,

Can someone tell me what NTSC colorspace to use, when rendering a video to CCE Basic for television playback in the U.S.? I'm using Sony Vegas 7.0d which I believe uses RGB within the editor, but can render to Huffy or other YUY2 formats. I'm just curious to know which is better when it comes to playback quality.

CCE will output YV12 because the output is MPEG2 (for DVD). If your editor uses RGB, then somewhere a conversion to YV12 must take place. It's probably just fine to let CCE take care of it, and in fact it may be preferable because CCE can do the proper down sampling based on whether you are encoding interlaced or progressive. So, don't output to YV12. You can output to RGB or YUV, neither of which is subsampled vertically.

To add to this, most definitely let CCE do the conversion because you can specify a 9-bit or 10-bit DCT for the conversion, which will essentially be lossless. 8-/9-/10-bit DCT settings with smooth color gradients can actually be discernable via the naked eye when you play back on a real set-top box (which has 10-bit converters).

For this reason, all of my work that goes through CCE is set to 10-bit.
