When I try to enter the "stand by" mode, my computer stays in the stand by mode only for a few seconds then it returns to normal, sometimes it cycles in and out of the stand by mode. This started recently.

Please edit to use a more descriptive title, such as adding "standby problems". (You need to use full edit.)

Can you explain further? Can you remember anything being installed, updated, or even downloaded around that time? All kinds of things can cause this, but it's usually hardware drivers or services (especially antivirus). Often spyware, bad av, and other crud simply won't let you standby at all, or only prevents automatic standby but not manual.
