Settings for anime encoding(megui)

Hi,

I'm pretty much new to encoding, I've been reading around and trying out different thing(at the moment I have prolly made some 20 encodes).

I am searching for settings which could improve my anime encoding.

My current settings are:

--pass 2 --bitrate 1000 --stats ".stats" --ref 5 --mixed-refs --no-fast-pskip --bframes 3 --b-rdo --bime --weightb --direct auto --subme 7 --trellis 2 --analyse all --8x8dct --pbratio 1.4 --vbv-maxrate 25000 --ratetol 2 --me esa --merange 25 --threads auto --thread-input --progress --no-psnr --no-ssim --output "" ""

Suggestions? Words of advise? Everything is welcome.

Rising the deblocking to 1:1 is not a bad idea. Also b-pyramid could improve compression a bit. --me esa is useless and kills the encoding time with no advantage on the final quality: use umh. also lower the --merange to 16.

I'm no expert, but based on how anime often has stagnant images displayed for more than a few frames, when I encode anime I set the number of b-frames higher than usual. I have no idea if this is actually a good idea, but it makes sense to me.

when frames are identical, they are encoded as p frames, but it won't harm anything (beyond encoding time, which you don't seem to care about if you have set --me esa :P) to allow 16 bframes.

Honest, who cares about encoding time? I had encodes which needed 25 hours :) for a 23 minutes episode, hahaaa, funny stuff :).

I go to sleep, 8 hours of encoding, and then I go to work, another like 10 hours untill I'm bback :) - bam! 18 hours - so really, what do I care? :).

--me esa helps little, try increasing --ref parameter to 8 or more, increasing number of B-frames(I use 6) with Adaptive B-Frames enabled. Set --qcomp to 1.0 may also help, I think...

Are there any changes to the settings which would be of benefit to a 720p anime?

well, what you mean with benefit? keeping those changes with HD stuff will take ages to encode...
