This seems to be new:

Support for two new mobile video profiles
Get better picture quality from MPEG-2 and live capture sources thanks to support for native PAL and NTSC pixel aspect ratios
Experience lower CPU use or better deblocking during playback thanks to a 10% increase in decoder performance

Hi guys,

Sorry I haven't posted here for a long time, it's been crazy busy here at DivX. Detailed information about new features is always given the the codec readme file.

Here are some bullet points for you though:

Support for de-interlacing during playback. Supports software de-interlacing if the advanced overaly decoder option is disabled, or hardware de-interlacing (recommended!) if the advanced overlay decoder option is enabled. This is perfect for 1080i, DV, and live capture material that is interlaced, making the motion super smooth and preventing jaggies.
Support for flagging PAL or NTSC aspects of 4:3 or 16:9 when encoding. The DirectShow decoder will display the correct aspect when the advanced overlay option is enabled (now on by default after installation), so long as your media player supports and appropriate renderer.
The decoder is over 10% faster (before post-processing), which means lower CPU use/better automatic deblocking levels/less chance of dropped frames when playing high-definition material on slower systems/faster transcode to other profiles.
Support for Mobile profile (up to 320 x 240 at 30 fps)
Support for qMobile profile (up to 176 x 144 at 15fps)

All enhancements are available in both community and Pro versions of the codec.

The automatic AR signalling works in windows media player, not in the latest divx player:)

It seems there is a bug in the 6.5 decoder causing a crash. Happened for me on both a Win2k and XP system. There are a few people on the DivX community forums with the same problem.

Just wanted to mention.... I was playing around with the new 1 pass (fast) option in the last DivX version and could never get it to work through avi.NET, infact, it work go slower than normal. Anyway, this latest version is fine, I can set the fast option via avi.NET and it works flawlessly. Don't know whether it's because the older version was on Vista, just thought I'd let you know the latest version is fine on Vista.

Is anyone having problems with playback with 6.5? I've never had divx crash (expect on rare occasions on corrupted avi's) and I've just updated from 6.4.whatever to 6.5 and any program that calls Divx to playback material just crashes.

I've installed all the divx components except EKG. I elected not to install any of the extra tools such as player etc.

Yep, WMP 11 crashes everytime i try to play a divx encoded file

I did the update to the latest version 6.5, but then Windows Media Player 10 crashed (when opening DivX avi file)...

my solution: changed 'Post processing level' of the 'Playback' tab to value 'Off' (instead of 'Automatic deblocking'), now WMP10 doesn't crash anymore...

I'm running Win XP pro SP2 (AMD Athlon Xp 2400+ on MSI K7N2 Delta mobo), why does DivX 6.5 make WMP crash, when previous version didn't? will playback quality be lower now?

on my laptop it works just fine, but I've got WMP 9 on it...

another question, sometimes the brightness of video is much lower, other times much higher? I think it has something to do with 'Overlay' feature when I have Intervideo WinDVR (pc tv) on?

many thanks for any help or info...

Regards

Yep you've nailed it - there's something wrong with the post processing. Neither automatic or full with sharpening will work - but it works fine turned off.

Yes quality will be reduced. Best to use xvid as playback (turn off support generic mp4 codecs) until they release a fix.

I'm hoping to have a patch for you guys by the end of the day. We're looking at it right now.

DivX 6.5 isn't very good, I expected many improvements, but nothing happens.

Like DivX AVC, and DivX ASP in one package, for example.

Careful, sillKotscha, you're treading rule 11 territory.

Careful, neuron2, I'm always aware of it ;)

I've put it on 'Custom deblocking', cause it works on one less than Max (on 'Max' WMP10 crashes...)

I don't understand, so the encoded movies still contain a lot of blocks whitch are removed afterwards while playback? what's that good for, why not encode with as low as possible blocks (the higher the bitrate and at 'Insane' encoding should render a minimum of 'blocks'?)?

The DivX encoder, like most others, is lossy and attempts to minimize the perceived loss of detail in the picture as the data rate is increasingly constrained. However, beyond some point block edges will become visible and so the decoder contains algorithms to reduce them. Usually you won't notice moderate deblocking during normal viewing.
