Determining File Size (XMPEG 4.20a & DiVX 4.12)

Hi,

I can't seem to calculate an accurate size when encoding a divx file. I'm currently using codec 4.12, but I've had this problem with previous releases. I've used a number of bitrate calculators, but the file is always much larger than estimated.

I'm using XMPEG 4.20a for encoding. I've seen many many comments on this topic, but no clear answer. I've seen lots of opinions on how to resolve this, but none seem to work. I'm aware of the effect of variable bitrates, etc. So perhaps there is no simple solution.

Can anyone shed some light on this? An example of settings would be great.

Are u trying to do one CD rips at near full DVD resulution ?
With Divx4.x you must stay near 0.2 bit per pixel, to get good file size prediction with standard settings.
If u use a lower bit's per pixel value try raising the Max quantizer to 18 or 24, this will allow the codec to compress it more, but keep in mind that quality will suck.
