Lossless H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Encoding?

I'm interested in importing my DVD collection into my computer but I've no wish to do it in a low bitrate format and then having to later do it better at a later date so I wanted to do it all in a lossless format.

After reading up about the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC codec it appears that the codec is able to offer lossless encoding but I've found no way of actually getting my computer to do it. I've experimented with numerous programs but I know next to nothing about complicated computer operations so I ask if anyone here knows how I could go about doing such a thing.

Also is there a way to get the audio done in a lossless format too and preserve the exact audio for use in surround sound and setups?

I thank you for taking the time to reply but I'm afraid I have no idea of how to use the linked application. As I said, I know next to nothing about these things, so instructions of how to turn a DVD into a lossless H.264 file would be greatly appreciated.

you might as well keep the original mpeg-2 if you want to go lossless.

the lossless h.264 file will be orders of magnitude larger than the original mpeg2. so maybe you'll want to simply rip your discs and play them off a media server or something.

btw, re-encoding to a lossy format isn't the end of the world - while you're re-encoding you have the chance to improve on the source a little with judicious use of filters.

bad way to do backup cause AVC High444 profile is deprecated, so predictive lossless coding introduced in this profile is. So AVC compliant decoder shouldn't decode such streams. And when new 444 profile will be approved (who knows when...) this lossless mode becomes absolutely non-compliance with spec (well basically it already is).
