Fast Sharpening function for Upscaling DVD's?

I'm looking for a sharpening function that's better than the built-in Avisynth Sharpen(), but still relatively fast. I've tried LimitedSharpenFaster() and while the results were excellent, it's a bit too slow. The built in Sharpen() is very fast but the sharpening effect is not natural. Thanks in advance.

What amount of upscaling?
("Upscaling" 720x576 PAL to 768x576 square pixels is a different story than up!scale!ing! NTSC 720x480 to 1920x1080 ...)

What were the scripts you used?
(Perhaps you used unlucky settings for LS. Basically it IS fast ... all lies with the supersampling)

Other filters to try could be aSharp or MSharpen ... whether these provide a better speed/quality ratio is a question of taste. :)

The upscaling isn't extreme.

This was the test script (very simple)

Seriously: one resize can be avoided. Then, with reducing the supersampling a bit (and lowering the strength for balance), you should get a few fps more:
