There's been a lot of time since the last announcement here, and there's been a lot of changes. Most important:

* The GUI has completely change. Now it has toolbars, the control widget is different and changes if the window gets smaller. New floating control for fullscreen mode. Customizable icons (several themes available).
* Now it can load dvd iso images (Open->File and select a *.iso file)
* Best support for subtitles. Now for instance, if you load an idx/sub you'll be able to select among all of subtitles that the file provides.
* You can set your preferred language for audio and subtitles (as explained in previous posts).
* You can save defaults for the video equalizer.
That's really quite a lot of changes, and almost all of them do matter to me. :)

:thanks:

Can't you add a DVDNav patch to your mplayer build? It would be nice to have DVD menus support. Check it here http://onebithq.com/root/mplayer/dvdnav

I could add support in smplayer for dvdnav://.... I think it wouldn't be difficult. But I'm not making builds of mplayer. Someone else would have to do it.

smplayer 0.4.15 update available for download (http://smplayer.sourceforge.net/windows/download_en.php)

Most important changes:
* Added an option to show an icon in the system tray.
* Pan & scan functions.
* Configurable shortcuts (see screenshot (http://www.imghut.net/images/41204.jpg)).
* Added support for VCDs (only for linux).

Very nice player :)

Will it be possible to play video with commercial codecs?

rvm
16th May 2007, 19:00
MPlayer uses its own native codecs, although according to the docs, on Windows it can use other installed codecs if needed.

There's also available in the MPlayer site (http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html) a package with binary codecs, which adds support for codecs that are not yet implemented natively.

When i play ANY video (wmv, avi etc etc) on my pc, smplayer only gives me audio... i dont have this problem on my laptop.
smplayer changes its window size to the video, but it gives me a black screen and i can only hear audio... i can make screenshots though

Video does work with MPUI (using MPlayer) for what its worth...

Maybe it's the colorkey, I have changed it recently. What version of smplayer are you using?

Does it happen the same if you select another video driver (directx:noaccel, gl or gl2)? (Options->Preferences->General)

Bh4i

directx:noaccel does work, but quality seems to be not good at al...

ps: im using last version, just downloaded :)

It seems that not all colorkeys work (or work in all computers).
Now the colorkey is configurable (Preferences->Advanced). Try to set it to #020202, that should work.

SMPlayer 0.5.0 released

There aren't many changes since the last announcement here, mostly small fixes. Although now there's an option which could make that srt/sub subtitles could look much better (info here (http://www.phpbbplanet.com/smplayer/viewtopic.php?t=151)).

But the most important is that a new full package with installer is available (about 11 MB). It also includes a more recent mplayer build.

There are also a zip and a 7z packages (in this case without mplayer).

SMPlayer 0.5.0 released

Thanks, man. I'll test.

Just to inform, the new build of MPlayer (May 22), from here (http://ffdshow.faireal.net/mirror/mplayer/) doesn't have WMV3 seek anymore. So, I rolled back to Abril 25 version.

I have h264 and 2 audio streams in mp4. When I wanna switch between two audio streams, I have to select audio, press "stop" and than click "play". Can you fix this that only selecting audio is enough, and get rid of two next steps.

rvm
2nd June 2007, 17:19
Unfortunately with some formats mplayer can't switch audio streams at run-time. I don't have any mp4 with 2 audio streams to test with, but I guess this is the case.

You can "fix" it by unchecking the option "fast audio track switching" in Preferences->Performance, but it will do what you're doing now manually: stop the video and start it again.

Another possibility that may work (or may not) would be to select "lavf" as demuxer, in Options->View info & properties.

Thanx, this suggestion work fine, and that(stop the video and start it again - It's only half of second ) doesn't bother me as long as I don't have to do it manually. :)

Full package for SMPlayer 0.5.2 is now available

Yes, now you can download a new full package, with Qt dlls, translations, a copy of mplayer, installer... from version 0.5.2.

Why a new package so soon?

Because Qt 4.3 has been released. Now SMPlayer is compiled with this version.

According to the docs, Qt 4.3 provides a feature that maybe some users may find interesting: Qt applications running on Window Vista will look as native applications.

I don't have Windows Vista so I can't test it. I don't know if a recompilation is enough or if something else is needed.

So if someone using Windows Vista tests it, please tell me the result.

Sourceforge download page (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=185512&package_id=216202&release_id=511845)

(A 7z file without mplayer is also available)

Feature request concerning deinterlacers:

Could you please change Yadif to use mode=1 (Bobbing) instead of only mode=0 please? This mode gives much more fluid motion than the other one. When deinterlacing at playback time I see no reason to waste motion, so bobbing is the only true method. Well, except your system is too slow too handle. But Yadif is known to work pretty fast...

Also good old KernelDeinterlacer would be nice to have on the list. But if you add it, please use threshold=5 or even lower. The default setting (10) is simply too high and leads to loads of artifacts.

Yeah, that would be fine...

rvm
8th June 2007, 17:12
I'll add those two deinterlacers, but I've just seen that yadif=1 in my computer (AMD-64 3200+) uses all CPU and I can't even watch a 720x576 mpeg video without sound desynchronization.

I don't know if this is normal, and yadif=1 requires a really fast processor, or if I'm doing something wrong.

Great to hear :)

About the playback performance: Strange! On my good old AthlonXP 2800+ I can watch my MPEG-2 captures (720x576 @ 25fps) just fine with "-vf-add yadif=1". I use AthlonXP optimized MPlayer build from Celtic Druid. Can this cause the difference?

Also when you add Yadif, please note that some clips require the field dominance to be changed: "-vf-add yadif=1:1" instead of "-vf-add yadif=1:0". If the field dominance is set wrong, it will jump forth and back all the time...

Thanks for your efforts!

I don't know, I was testing it on linux, with a self-compiled mplayer, and so optimized for my processor. I'll try it tonight on windows (it seems that mplayer is slightly faster on windows).

Thanks for the info. I'll add then a "field dominance" option too. Meanwhile if someone needs it for some video, the option "-field-dominance 1" can be passed to mplayer to change to bottom field first.

Well, DVDs aren't heavy in terms of CPU usage. But try to use Yadif mode 1 with this kind of video (http://www.bloghdtv.com/files/christina_aguilera.html) (the file are down, I know, but try to search in other place). To get you an idea, with 'Lowpass5' the CPU (Core 2 Duo running at 3 GHz without GPU acelleration) usage is around 20%, with 'Yadif mode 0' I get 40%, and with 'Yadif mode 1' is impossibile to watch, because I get 50% (can't get more, because MPlayer doesn't use the other core). As you can see, Yadif loves the CPU. :)

:thanks:

Just a suggestion: Maybe it should be called "Yadif (Keep Framerate)" and "Yadif (Double Framerate)" instead of "Mode 0" and "Mode 1", because the mode numbers might be confusing for the regular user. In fact mode numbers require the user to refer the MPlayer docs in order to understand what it means...

There's something wrong, I can guarantee. Here, with a MPEG2 720x480@29.97 FPS (or 60 non-full FPS) the CPU usage has an average of 25% and a top of 30%. But, hey, I'm talking about a Core 2 Duo running at real 3 GHz. It's really impossible that an AXP 2800+ has half of the performance. I'm not saying that you're lying. I'm saying that you're probably doing something that rvm and me are not. Any idea?

SMPlayer uses MPlayer engine that doesn't use DirectShow. So, you can't use FFDShow, CoreAVC or any other DirectShow filter/plugin.

Maybe we can use this video (http://www1.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/samples/MPEG-VOB/interlaced/tv2-1_25.mpg) to test deinterlace performance. It's a 720x576 mpeg.

BTW, I thought I've got an AMD 64 3200+, but Windows XP (and MPlayer) identifies as AMD Athlon 64 3400+ 2.2 GHz, so I think there's no so much difference with yours.

Maybe the difference could be in the drivers of the graphic card?

Well, I'll try to update the drivers some day and see what happens.

Edit: I've just update the NVidia drivers, I don't see any difference, same CPU usage, or even more.

The strange thing is that in linux, in the same computer, mplayer uses a lot more CPU. HD videos are impossible to watch. I guess this is because I'm using the open source drivers for NVidia cards instead of the proprietary ones, which I think they must be more optimized.

OK. I tested the sample provided by rvm. Machine: Core 2 Duo running at 3 GHz + Radeon X800XL (latest drivers) + WinXP Pro.

With 'Yadif' mode 1 (portable from MPlayer with MVTools script) running with MPC + FFDShow I got an average of 13% and top of 16%. With SMPlayer 0.5.8 and 'Yadif' mode 0 I got an average of 1% and a top of 4%. With mode 1 I got 4% of average and a top of 7%.

This sample is really light when compared to the DVD that I tested before. And finally it makes sense in terms of (our) CPU comparison. ;)

You have a very nice mkv support for your player. We can see the name of the streams and all chapters. :thanks:
Unfortunatly 99% of my files are mp4 and for mp4 there is no support for chapters, streamnames and tags. It would be wonderful to have a full mp4 suport - do you plan to add something like this? :)

When using MPlayer (no matter which GUI), you will be limited to the "built-in" OpenSource H.264 decoder from libavcodec/ffmpeg. Until they improve their H.264 decoder, there won't be a way to speed-up H.264 decoding in MPlayer. Well, except buying a faster CPU of course ^^

Nevertheless, I recently read about multi-threading support in libavcodec's H.264 decoder. This should speed-up H.264 decoding on PC's with more than one core significantly. Unfortunately it seems the multi-threading support is limited to slices...

Jep and also you won't be able to use DXVA (or direct API's like PureVideo 1/2) with such Linux Port Players unfortunately (but i think the Videolan Team announced something about supporting DXVA at least for Mpeg-2 natively under win32 soon), so natively they are better with Linux Drivers (oficial Nvidia/ATI) and X.org, but i really would like to now if they can compare in terms of decoding speed natively vs a Windows System with DXVA no one ever tested this yet :P
So a test with the same graphics card (same H.264/Mpeg-2 HD files (complexity) like Blu-Ray streams or better selfmade 50/60i streams that really require much more power then Blu-Rays most progressive available 24p streams because of the realtime 1080i->1080p conversion) like an Geforce 8 on Linux with native drivers and Mplayer/Videolan and compareing cpu utilization (and power requirements) vs a Windows XP/Vista System (PureVideo 1/2) and for example Cyberlinks and Mainconcepts Decoder i think this would be really interesting as you compare alot more then just graphics here also the kernel response and how much accelleration Nvidias Drivers offer under Linux. And especialy you compare ofcourse how much effective DXVA really is vs another OS and Driver(Module) architecture.

PS: Im not sure but Nvidias Linux Driver don't interface with Mplayer directly but via X.org right ? so would be a Motion Adaptive Deinterlacer like used in the Windows XP/Vista Driver via shaders even be possible for Mplayer to access i mean if Yadiff had to be used it would be quiet obvious wich System would win then as Yadiff would torture the Cpu alot on the Linux System. I have to less knowledge about the internals of Linux architecture so hard todo such a test without knowing anything about how Linux Video internaly works (how to get the most performanced results in terms of acceleration and GPU ofloading) :P

I think that MPlayer engine has a fast H.264 decode; a little faster than MPC + FFDShow. IMO, except for the multi-thread lacking, it's only a few steps behind the CoreAVC. Don't you think?

I'm trying SMPlayer now and I find that one specific feature is missing which is to be able to crop the display a bit. Because I output my video to a TV I lose some parts of the video. I usually solve this in zoom player by stretching the video hight and width, but in SMPlayer I didn't find a way to do this. I saw there is a function of zooming out which is supposed to be triggered by pressing "w" but it didn't have any affect.

I need to zoom out.
probably didn't explain myself well...
When outputting to the TV from the PC, you lose some of the picture at the edges, because of the way TV screens work. so what i need is to zoom out of the picture so that the actual video's frame would be smaller so that when the computer sends the image to the tv, i can see all of it. this is done with zoom player by.. let's call it reverse-cropping. i create black borders which aren't visible because the TV doesn't show the edges, and that way the actual footage IS displayed.
In short I need to zoom out.

I see.

What you need is the expand filter!
This will add black borders around the video, so your TV will only crop the borders, not the actual video.
Try something like vf-add expand=-100:-100 with MPlayer. (Yes, you need to use negative values)

rvm, I got a few more feature requests ^^

1. If I select Video -> Size -> 100% and then accidentally resize the window by hand, I can not go back to 100%, because 100% is already checked and cannot be clicked again. So I have to go to some other size first, before I can go back to 100%. Therefore I suggest you add something like "Custom" (maybe with a separator) to Video -> Size, which will be checked automatically as soon as the user manually resizes the window.

2. SMPlayer already has a "Software Volume Control" checkbox in preferences. Unfortunately the maximum volume is still limited to 100% when software volume control is enabled. The reason I sometimes used software volume control is that I want to go above 100% with some very quiet videos. Would be nice if I could go up to at least 300% volume with software control enabled. Also "Software Volume Control" in the "Audio" menu instead of Preferences would be fine for faster access.

3. When speaking about volume: I also noticed that "Volume Normalization" is not available in SMPlayer. Well, I don't like MPlayer's volume normalization very much and only use it here and there, but shouldn't it be added for completeness?
