I was just reading up about this and while its not as good quality as other products, using the GPU/Shaders to accelerate video encoding is appropriate to me.

I was wondering if there were any projects that did the similar with the nvidia 8800 unified programmable shaders?

nvidia has never been a company to pursue video stuff, only 'graphics' stuff

ati and matrox have always had their hand in video stuff, and hence why ati have avivo, and nvidia seems to want to have a physics engine for games only ;)
