View Full Version : extract titles to .MPG files without reenc?

Hi everyone!

This is probably the wrong forum, but then again authoring experts are most likely to be able to help me ;)

I want to extract one title of a DVD and convert it into a MPG file (with the original AC3 audio). TMpegEnc does a great job at demuxing VOBs and creating my wanted MPG files.

Unfortunately the affected DVDs don't use a separated VOB file for each title, so I have to reauthor it for every title - And since they are all slightly bigger than 1GB, I have to combine the splitted VOBs before feeding it to TMpegEnc.

This is a really time consuming process since it needs so much user interaction - Does anyone of you know a tool that can do that in one (or less than my current strategy needs) step?

Thanks a lot!

Just extract it with DVD Decrypter (IFO Mode) then rename .VOB to .MPG ;)

Dont know what you mean. What is the purpose of Tmpegenc?
And which one... the encoder or the authoring?

I only used the "Mpeg Tools" of Tmpegenc to demux the VOB and re-multiplex it back to a standard MPEG file. reason for this is that my media center doesn't support playing of VOB files... But I'll try the trick with just renaming it ;)

DVD Decrypter also splits the VOBs in 1GB chunks (which is of course cool for DVDs, but not for my purpose ;)). It has a great feature that allows direct demultiplexing, but since I'd like to use the VIDEO_TS folder (and DVD Decrypter only seems to support disc sources) I'd need an additional step to create a full image.

Is there a ripping tool that supports direct demultiplexing and file source? This would already be a big time saver :)

thanks a lot!

I believe VobEdit will allow you to demux directly from a VOB file.

When I use DVD Decrypter to extract directly from a DVD, I use IFO mode, choose file splitting: NONE in the settings for IFO mode, and choose Enable Stream processing and demux for each Video and Audio stream I want. This gives me an .m2v file and AC3 files.

Then I use TMPG Mpeg Tools Mpeg System-2 to multiplex the files into an .mpg file I could play on my Computer. Or I reauthor the files back to vob files using IFOEdit to re-author it to DVD.

Perhaps DVD Decrypter splits the VOB files, but if you demux directly with Decrypter you can avoid splitting the m2v and AC3 files. Only the subtitles need be left in the VOB container with DVD Decrypter.

Yes that seems to be the best way and will cut my work down to two steps for each title. Unfortunately DVD Decrypter doesn't seem to support a local VIDEO_TS folder as input? All it lets me choose from is my optical drives :(

Unfortunately DVD Decrypter doesn't seem to support a local VIDEO_TS folder as input?Good ol' "SmartRipper" will allow you to do the same thing with files already on your hard drive - and you can set its filesize (as you can also do with DVD Decrypter) so that it saves the Title as ONE (.VOB) file...

You can use DVDShrink in Re-author mode. Just make sure you use No Compression and uncheck Split VOB files in 1GB chunks" in Edit >> Preferences >> Output Files.

Awesome! Both those nice old tools (should really have tried them myself.. ;)) do their job perfectly - And my media center obviously doesn't mind playing vob files when they are renamed to MPG.

Thanks a lot!!

You could also use ReJig to demux specific streams from a title (PGC). Choose IFO mode, open your ifo (vts_xx_0.ifo), select the title and a/v/s streams you want. Then multiplex them in a MPEG PS using ImagoMPEG-Muxer.

ReJig will work on most DVDs. It may fail (desync) if the number of audio streams or their format changes during the video program. In that case I merge the VOBs and use VobEdit-> Demux by cells.

Hi j7n

Thanks for your tip! Since it's no longer a problem for me to play VOBs directly (stupid media center), I prefer one of the one-step solutions. With smartripper I can extract titles to a single vob file and strip unwanted audio/subtitle streams in one single step :)

So far I haven't had any sync issues which I have observed with some other tools I tried in my odyssey to find the right one :)
