Windows Media Video 9 Advanced Profile is now supported by NetEncoder which is a distributed WMV transcoder.

NetEncoder supports up to 3 PC's and compresses AVI files about 3 times faster than a single PC.

This looks very interesting! One detail caught my attention:

At the end of each encoding job, NetEncoder sends a request to each client and receives a copy of the encoded result in its default working directory. Currently, NetEncoder does not assemble the output files back together into one large WMV file. For example in a case where there is a server and two clients, you will end up with three WMV files that make up the entire encoded video. These WMV files can be played back seamlessly using the Windows Media Player or archived to disk or to DVD.
This seems strange. Why are the encoded files not stitched back together? This should be relatively easy if you're already using the WMF SDK.

Thank you for your question. Actually, this is something that I will probably add to NetEncoder as an option later if enough users ask for it.

It was not a high priority item since the original studio that commisioned me to write NetEncoder here in Los Angeles did not need that feature.

Right now i'm in the process of showing the product to other local encoding shops and at the same time trying to find the best way to showcase NetEncoder at the upcoming NAB.

is it using an own developed encoder or the encoder from microsoft?

NetEncoder is entirely based on Microsoft's encoding technology. All I've done is create a shell application that takes advantage of the distributed component technology that already exists within the WMEncoder.

With all due respect to the European Union regulators and their complaints against Microsoft's Windows Media strategy, I think Microsoft has done an admirable job in creating a robust digital media platform that can unify this fragmented technology the same way they unified the personal computing world.

Can you just use the "copy" command with the join optons to stitch the files back togetehr?

You can't simply use the "Copy" command to join WMV or any other video files since they are structured files and have headers, etc.
