DivX 6 Converter Subtitle problem

Dear all,
I often use subtitle option for Non English Langguage movie when convert them from DVD to DivX format. But found some annoying problem in some movie, as the subtitle result sometimes have big black box behind it and closing almost 80% of movie area/screen. I really hate this, are they any method to make those black background in subtitle become transparant? Or do I need to rip it to VOB first with subtitle and then convert to DivX with DivX converter?

as someone that uses subtitles my advices are:

Divx converter handling of the subs is not good, use Drdivx that will do a better job.

I personally do the following:

1. encode the dvd without subs with my favourite encoder(avi.Net, autogk,StaxRip etc)

2- rip the subs with VSrip to idx format

3- mux the avi from step1 with ripped subs from step2 with sub2divx.

why sub2divx? i can change colour,background, position of the subs etc.
