Probably you watched em with proper upsampling...
Besides, from the pictures posted, it's clear that the current filterchain helps alleviate the problem...
Yes, from 8x8 blocks -> 2x2 blocks...
With YV12 you cant get further on the chroma planes!
...so there should be some extra filtering ideas that are escaping me.
Yes, there are two options...
1. Proper chroma upsampling while playback
2. Proper chroma upsampling -> Encoding in RGB24/YUV colorspace
