Would it be possible to mount it and playback with WinDVD? I thought you needed a blu-ray drive since they need to exchange keys with the software player or something.
I have a PS3 and could backup Talladega Nights if someone provided me with the key :)

Ok. My guess now is that its not possible to mount an iso from an encrypted disc and simply play it with WinDVD. WinDVD really needs to connect with a Blu-ray drive.
But if you copy the image/all files from the blu-ray disc (using linux on your ps3 as suggested in my previous post) to your PC and someone else (with a windows blu-ray drive/burner) finds the key for this movie and posts it on this forum then you should be able to decrypt the files you copied from your ps3 blu ray disc.
However as explained above there might be another option.
First of: as far as I understand WinDVD has to communicate with the drive in a "special way" (there is some AACS authentification going on and retrievel of IDs which are later used to decrypt the volume key). Here is part of how its shown in the AACS specs (the "Host" would be WinDVD in our example).
http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/4934/aacsdriveauth2jd.th.png (http://img230.imageshack.us/my.php?image=aacsdriveauth2jd.png)
Normally a Blu-ray drive/burner is connected to your windows PC. So if your windows drivers are working this special (low level?) communication is no problem. This is how others have managed to play their blu-ray discs on their PC and (when looking in WinDVD's memory) found the decryption keys.
To use the PS3 drive in this way may or may not be possible. I don't know yet. I believe there are basicly two options:
1) Remove the drive from the PS3 and somehow connect it to your PC and install drivers. No idea if this is possible (or whether there are suitable windows drivers).
2) Use linux on your PS3 (one distro is supported by Sony) and make sure your blu-ray drive is accessible (are there common linux drivers?). Then install someting like iSCSI on both your PS3 and your PC. If that all works connect your PC to your PS3 through ethernet and mount the remote blu-ray drive on your PC.
Someone with a PS3 would have to test this. There is some info on iSCSI on wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISCSI) or (for example) this implementor (http://www.rocketdivision.com/sdk.html) of iSCSI/ATA over Ethernet:
StarPort fully implements iSCSI and ATA-over-Ethernet client side protocols enabling you to connect to remote storage appliances such as disk arrays, tape drives and autoloaders, CD/DVD/Blu-Ray/HD-DVD burners, DVD-ROM image libraries.
That sounds sorta promising: if it can handle a remote Blu-Ray burner then it might be able to handle remote Blu-Ray drives in the PS3.
If this would work then it may be possible to make WinDVD believe its communicating with a Blu-ray drive (and the authentification would succeed). Then you could also be able to retrieve the volume keys etc. But if/how this really works with windows/linux progs/drivers is something that simply has to be tried.
Maybe we should put this in a separate thread: "Using your PS3 to decrypt/backup Blu Ray discs" or something along those lines. There people with a PS3 (I believe there are quite many already) could share their experiences on this matter.

Blu-ray Already Ripped on PS3
The troubles with Linux begin.
by Hilary Goldstein
December 1, 2006 - Just a few days after the release of Terra Soft Solutions' Yellow Dog Linux v5.0, hackers found a way to rip Blu-ray movies onto the PS3 hard drive.
Yellow Dog Linux v5.0, which can be downloaded at Terra Soft's site (http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/), allows users to turn their PlayStation 3 into a personal computer. The hard drive is segmented to prevent users from manipulating the PS3's own software, but that hasn't stopped hackers from exploiting Sony's new console.
Multiple sites, including PVRWire (http://www.pvrwire.com/2006/12/01/rip-blu-ray-movies-on-a-ps3/), are demonstrating methods to illegally copy Blu-ray movies to the PS3 hard drive. Since Blu-ray drives are not yet available on PCs, the PS3 version of Linux is the first user-accessible OS capable of working with the new media.
Unlike music CDs, which allow users to create back-up copies for personal use, Blu-ray and DVD movies carry express copyright laws forbidding any form of duplication. Even ripping a Blu-ray disc to a PS3 for your own enjoyment is in violation of these laws.

But are you sure that the m2ts are decypted? Also with a PC drive I can dump a Iso of a Blu-ray movie disc, but the file are still encrypted.

No, but can't you just connect you PS3 HDD to your PC after copying a Blu-Ray disc onto it from your PS3, and then decrypt it on your PC.
This will save PS3 owners a lot of money for buying an expensive PC Blu-Ray drive.

Yes, you could just send the ISO over to the PC for later decryption (has anyone tried mounting it on a PC so it works?)...
That might even work for key retreval... But that will take up alot of space, in future upto 100GB...
But the solution arnezami has come up with is just so much nicer... Hope it will become a reallity too...
Best regards!

Here's a thought:
Why not connect your PS3 to a PC over the network, or even better (since it's faster) via a USB 2.0 port.
Then compile a version of BackupBluray to run on the PS3.
You should be able to decrypt the disc and transfer it directly to the PC's hardrive in realtime.
This would also be usable by the average PS3 owner, making it much more useful for the majority of Bluray player owners.

Hmm or we could dump the .iso on to a network drive or something. And decrypt it on Windows when the key is available.
I'm going to try this now!
noisehole
22nd January 2007, 18:31
well, you could try this. but it prolly wont work since its "only" linux
mount your r/w nfs/smb/... share
cp -a the disc contents over
use backupblueray plus the known key on your pc. there's no need for local (ps3) storage or an isofile. decryption is done at file level. the advantage of a volume/title/cps key is that the whole aacs-auth crap isnt needed.
even muslix stated that he had no bd equipment at all.
so your currently available choices are limited:
- get the volume key with a pc bd drive and the known windvd hijacking hack
- wait for someone doing step 1 for you
- hack the ps3 booting process and inject your own code, so the ps3 softwareplayer can be misused for volume key retrieval

I think i'm going to just copy the blu-ray movie over FTP or maybe mounting a nfs running on my linux server. Just need to get me a USB keyboard (or hope you can install it without it) and finish the YDL iso download :)

How about just ripping the BD drive from the PS3 and installing in the PC? :)

Ok I did some experimenting last night.
I found out Windows 2003 and Vista have an iSCSi initiator built in. Look in Admin tools.
YDL for PS3 has an iSCSi initiator/daemon rpm on the disc. I loaded the RPM but could not setup targets because the daemon would exit out with an error which was not shown.
I also tried to install Gentoo for PS3 but after the install I got constant reboots.
Was going to try to use emerge to install iscsi on that.
There is also http://www.open-iscsi.org/
If anyone is really good with linux and could get this working I believe iSCSi would be the way to go as you could use the BluRay drive just like it was in you PC.

I'm going to buy a USB keyboard this week and try this myself.
I found the iSCSI Software initiator for Windows XP on Microsoft's website:)
So you have installed iSCSI from the rpm, but when you try to run it, it crashes? Have you tried to run it from console?

Yes, I only run it from console. It crashes every time. I might try Fedora on it next.

Interesting and great to hear you're experimenting arleady. Is it possible (I'm no linux guru either ;)) that some programs aren't compiled properly for the Cell processor (which to my understanding is a PowerPC or PPC if you will). But if its part of Yellow Dog Linux then you would expect it not to crash. Have you tried taking some executable from the disc and simply do a "--help" after it (or simply run it). Just to check if its properly compiled. Some linux gurus might be able to help here :). Maybe its possible to recompile the iSCSI source on the PS3 itself so we won't have any troubles.
Also there seems to have been an update to the kernel (http://news.softpedia.com/news/Sony-PlayStation-3-support-in-Linux-Kernel-41985.shtml) mainly provided by Sony (especially for the PS3 hardware) and I don't know if its already incorporated in the new/your YDL disrto. iSCSI seems to be pretty deep into the kernel so there might be some issues there. I don't know.
Keep up the good work :).

PS. I'm currently looking into the whole hypervisor thing in the PS3 (http://moss.csc.ncsu.edu/~mueller/cluster/ps3/doc/LinuxKernelOverview.html) to see if it will become a problem or not when trying to use iSCSI (apparently some ATAPI commands are rejected). Its for protecting against certain attacks (I guess mainly to prevent reflashing of the drives etc). I don't know. Will try to see how AACS works in this matter and if this might be an issue. Right now I don't think so because I have the impression that the original OS on the PS3 is also behind the hypervisor and it can play Blu-Ray movies (and thus succeeds in this AACS auth process). So I'm optimistic.

dd if=/dev/cdrom of=/mynetdir/bluraymovie.iso
Does somebody know if MKB is on that iso?
An attacker with a Device Key would be able to decrypt the movie if MKB is there.

Yes, the MKB is just a file on the disk, but you won't be able to do the full decryption on an ISO. The Volume ID is used in the decryption handshaking and it isn't part of the ISO, it's only readable by a real drive. However if you already know the title key, you can use that to decrypt an ISO.
(If I read the specs correctly that is)

Ok I got Gentoo installed and KDE also so now I should be able to install iscsi target with the command "emerge iscsitarget" but first I need to get the kernel source installed on the PS3. Here is a good, straight forward tutorial (http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_iscsi) for regular Gentoo that should work. The PS3 just told me it neded the kernel source so I could not finish it before I had to leave for work.

I wonder how you want mount the hddvd drive a ripped iso on your PS3. As i know there is no UDF2.5 support for linux :(
Apparently there is a patch available for the linux kernel (for 2.6.16) which gives you UDF 2.5 support. If that works then you could access the files directly on the disc and thus decrypt them on the PS3 if you have a key using the recompiled source code (for the Cell processor/PPC) from NghtShd (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=121194) when he releases it.

Hi!
I'm currently waiting for my PS3 (60GB) unit to come in to the Sony Store here in Canada (hopefully by around end of February / sometime in March).
I'm really interested in trying out Linux on the PS3 to rip the Blu-Ray movies to HDD, once I get the unit itself.
Now, I admit I have no knowledge of how Linux works, having mainly used Windows all my life. And nor do I understand a lot of this technical information discussed here about it, and about programming and such, etc. (being mainly a multimedia person).
Are there any guides on the Internet on how to install Linux on a PS3, and then use it to decrypt / rip / copy (whichever) Blu-Ray discs to hard drive? Especially easy-to-understand guides at that?
Would appreciate any help or assistance :)

Here are some links. Hope it gets you started. :)
Official Yellow Dog Linux website: http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/support/installation/ (and a pdf install guide here (http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/support/installation/ydl5.0_ps3_guide.pdf))
Guide to installing Gentoo on PS3 (wiki): http://wiki.ps2dev.org/ps3:linux:installing_gentoo (here is more (http://wiki.ps2dev.org/ps3:linux:installing_cell_sdk))

There is probably much more to find. Keep in mind though that certain things might prove to be quite hard if you're not (at all) acquainted with linux. Most notably (re-)compiling programs for the PPC/Cell processor etc.
But if you have any questions you can always ask here or on any of the above forums.

i think the best backup solution is the sony blu-ray writer oder the lg h10n for ps3.
perhaps the sony blu-ray writer is the same drive as the ps3 drive?
