Audio problems - speech too quiet

Ok I'm having some weird playback issues here but I'm sure its something simple. I'm trying to play a .mkv file encoded with x264 with Media Player Classic. The sound seems to work ok except for the speech. Whenever somebody is talking its very quiet almost imperceptible even. This has happened with several different files now so I figure its got to have something to do with a wrong codec or setting in MPC. Any ideas?

What is the audio format? AC3, MP3 etc.
Is this the original format or did you convert it?

Any chance you could post a sample?

Its an HD-DVD rip I downloaded. I don't know how to figure out the audio format or how to post a sample.
