illegal audio stream with TMPGEnc

I've just started using TMPGEnc to encode AVI's captured with VDub (both Huffyuv and uncompressed) into Mpegs so I can use the smart encode feature in Magix to burn DVD's. The original problem is that at 320 kb/sec the built in audio decoder sounds more like a 64 kb/sec, badly encoded mp3 (i.e. not very good). The toolame encoder looked promising, so i asked the program to use that instead. When i start encoding the program then ecodes a temporal wave file and once finished TMPGEnc gives an error message of "illegal audio stream". I have not found anything anywhere that could help me fix this and toolame seems to come recommended to use with TMPGEnc. Any help?

One correction to the above:
TMPGEnc and toolame will get on perfectly if I tell it to encode the audio stream in 44100 hz at 320 and 384 kb/s both as a combined file or audio/video seperatly. It just wont do it at 48 khz. it will do it if I put out audio and video seperatly, however audio plays at 4 speed and crashes Media Player and sounds more like the daleks (which doesn't go well in a Kirk monologue). This also goes for source material in 44 and 48 khz, no difference.

Consider it a mixed blessing. Once considered a decent audio encoder, toolame has been surpassed in quality by many different apps. Consider as an option bypassing audio encoding in tmpgenc. Instead, demux your audio and transcode with an app such as Aften (ac3), which sounds much more accurate to the original audio.

Aften even has a GUI available to simplify the whole thing.

If you're set on staying with MP2, look for the later versions of Toolame on www.rarewares.org. There's also a branch called "TWOlame" with a later build, but I dunno if the syntax is identical.

BTW, is your source wav in 44.1 ? Haven't used Tmpgenc in years, but doesn't it also prompt your for locations to SSRC.exe ? It possibly is looking for SSRC to change the sample rate from 44.1 to 48.0, which is DVD compliant.

Hi!

You haven't stated what your INITIAL audio format and frequency are when capturing.

You should use Uncompressed PCM (.WAV) and convert/copmpress afterwars...

I have tried capturing both, 44.1 khz and 48 khz on the original AVI, it made no difference, it just will not encode into 48 khz under toolame. it will encode into 44.1 khz no problem. the audio would be uncompressed PCM, since it is captured as uncompressed AVI in VDub. What I'm really looking for is anything to convert these gigantic AVI's (200 gigs+) into mpgs that i can edit, add menus and burn to DVD under Magix Movie Edit Pro 10, which cannot handle these AVI's without losing audio synch.

true enough. :D i do capture uncompressed for video AND audio.

Right, I think that's it. Taking Pookies advice I downloaded toolame from rarewares. I was a bit dissapointed when the version I downbloaded (tooLAME0.2l.zip) matched exactly the version I already had. I nevertheless deleted the version I had and installed this one instead (nuts I know, it was an identical version) and ran the whole thing again. Now it works no problem! :eek: :confused: :D . I don't know, but computers are by far not an exact science.
Happy enough with toolame, the audio in what I do isn't all that dependent on high end quality, but the built in TMPGEnc is just way to crappy. Happy days!
