Suggestions that could make the most of my anime-encodes (DVD source)

HI,

I was wondering. I want to encode a Aniime DVD to MPEG-4 (wichever format would be reccomended)
Could anime-encoders give me some pointers what to look for (troubles in the source)
And possibly give me some suggestions and settings (pref. x264) that could make my encodes
possibly look very good/to make the most?

1. wich format is best? Is there alot of difference? My choice would be pref. x264 sice I'm getting more familiar with the options.

2. Wich Avisynth plugins/settings could I tryout/do you reccomend for anime source post-processing?
