Yes, I know that the topic would rouse remonstrance, but that's exactly the issue.
I'm mastering a short 24p film, going from a 30i uncompressed QT to a progressive DVD. This is a 7-minute film for festival distribution - I don't care about encoding speed or file sizes, just about quality!
Here is the full workflow:
1. DVCAM interlaced telecine transfer (YV12 4:1:1)
2. Avid editing (apparently RGB, but no one in Avid's forums seems to know(!))
3. QT export (RGB or YUY2)
4. IVTC in Avisynth (YUY2/YV12 only)
5. Final tweaks in PPro (rumor has it that PPro2 can work in YUV, kinda)
6. Frameserve through DebugMode (RGB or YUY2) to
7. TMPGEnc (RGB only) to
8. MPEG2 (YV12 4:2:0)
As you can see, that's one big colorspace mess. Therefore:
1. I think RGB will be better - have just two conversions, in steps 2 & 8, and you can trust any software that if it gets RGB it'll spit RGB without any extra subsampling ...but I can't find any IVTC deinterlacer that works in RGB!
2. If I obtain CCE I can stick with YUV, but don't trust Avid's and PPro's internal processing.
Insights/random thoughts will be greaty appreciated.
