Title says it all basically. Since the decrypting has already been done by BackupHDDVD, is CPU or GPU usage reduced when playing a backup in:
PDVD 7.2 Ultra
PDVD 6.5
or
WinDVD 8.0 Japan Release ?
If prior decryption plus elimination of the HDCP handshake are made possible by using a backup copy, the required specs for the system playing the HDDVD could be quite different from the recommendations/requirements on the PDVD website.
I cannot test this yet as I'm waiting for my HD-DVD xbox add on to be returned to me, but I'm very curious to hear other users findings.

Yes. Using BackupHDDVD not only takes out the crypto overhead, but speeds up access to the file itself (HD-DVD is ~30mbps, a typical SATA drive is a bit faster).
Keep in mind that you're still decoding a 1080p VC1 stream, and that is what accounts for the vast majority of processor usage while viewing HD-DVDs.

This is one of the first things I tested. While on Average I only saw a 3-5% decrease in CPU load, this may be different on other systems. I'm running an Opteron 165 @ 2.7.
Memory usage of PowerDvd dropped by 48K a full 25%.

Excellent points, and in many cases someone is decoding the 1080p VC1 stream then scaling it down (or up!) to the resolution of their display device as well. I have a 2.0Ghz Core 2 Duo processor, here is the info I have of the two HD-DVD's I own on PDVD 6.5 HDDVD:
* Full Metal Jacket: 50-55% on both cores, ~26.5Mbps stream
* King Kong: (could not play feature but on menu loop) 48-52% both cores, ~13.5Mbps stream (I suspect the feature title would be more intensive)
I will report back in around a week, when I get my add-on drive back, once I've had the chance to try the same on backed up version.

i think you are wrong with the SATA speed there.
30Mbytes a second is even slow for a SATA HDD. mine hits about 65MB / sec. these encodes are 30Mbits a sec which is way less (8x less) than 30Mbytes / sec of a HDD.

bits and bytes, it gets confusing sometimes I suppose.
Any other users willing to post up some numbers? I was suprised that doubling the bitrate of the video stream caused only a small increase in CPU usage.
We need a larger data set do really see any trends though...

playing HD on Intel 3.4HT with 1.5gig ram, 100% usage prior and 40-50 % after. Decrypting about 35%. Doing both together 90-98%. Are you really getting 50% on a dua Core?

with my intel 3,2HT and 1GB RAM also 90-98%.
i will change to a core 2 duo in the next weeks.

CPU figures can be a bit misleading, because graphics cards sometimes make a big difference, but sometimes make no difference at all. Some drivers don't accelerate yet, some (like mine) accelerate VC1 but not AVC, etc etc
For comparison, my Pentium D 3.5ghz is at 50%ish for VC1 titles in software mode, 30% with DXVA on with a 6600GT. For AVC averaging 19/20mbit (around about as high as a AVC HDDVD will get) it's 85%ish, and DXVA makes no difference at all.
ps all the bitrate figures here are video bitrates only btw, not total muxrate.

AMD x2 4400+ @2.47ghz
ati x1300 256ram
powerdvd 7.1 (no hardware acce. available)
1gb ram
King kong and mummy play smooth
batman begins and the last samurai jitter like crazy
any advice?

To enable hardware acceleration, run CLDMA and hit the diagnostic button and let it run thru the video tests. CLDMA is located inside of program files/Cyberlink/powerdvd.
With hardware acceleration enabled with an ati card, it seems to help. With it enabled with an nvidia card, it seems much worse. You can only enable or disable the check box while the dvd is stopped.

I have smoothed out playback on all movies by installing catalyst 7.1 drivers and the amd dual-core optimizer...
