I have a Sony DVD camcorder that records direct to DVD in MPEG2 in widescreen format with full 5.1 AC3 sound. I'm looking for a program that I can use to author / edit the best sceens from several DVD's into one DVD. Any suggestions? I tried DVDPlanner (free version) but it does not recognize any of the VOB files that are created by the camcorder.
Thanks,

Best App for DVD Camcorder Files? Please read and follow forum rules, specifically, rule 12: do not ask what's best.

OK, fair enough.
How about this: Is there any program I can use for the above-described application?
Thanks,

If I told you how I would do it, you'd probably decide to take up knitting instead. :)

Is your camcorder outputting elementary streams (MPEG2 & AC3) or a VOB file?

You can demux the vob files or use authoring tools that accept vob files, like MuxMan (0.17 and later)

Thanks for the suggestions. The camcorder does indeed output VOB files, so I'm looking for a tool that will take VOBs as an input format and then allow me to edit things (like removing chapters or combining chapters from 2 different VOBs) and then put it all back together again in a new VOB that I can burn to disc.
TMPG DVD Author looks like it might to the job, but it's not clear from their web site if the program will output the AC3 audio in 5.1 or if it will be converted to 2-channel output. I want to preserve the 5.1, as recording in 5.1 is one of the nice things about this camcorder. Here is what their footnote says:
"The output will be 1ch / 2ch . (If the source is 5.1ch, you will be able to output it even after editing, but you won't be able to re-encode it)."
Does anyone know what that last comment about re-encoding means?
I will look into MuxMan this week. Thanks for all of the suggestions.

Thanks for the info. Too bad this program will not preserve the 5.1 AC3 audio.
Are there any programs that will take VOB input files and preserve the 5.1 audio?
Will DVD Lab Pro do this?
Thanks,

TMPG DVD Author will output 2 ch audio.I believe this is incorrect (I've just tested this). If the source material includes 5.1 .AC3 audio, the output of "TMPGEnc DVD Author" v.1.6 will include the audio as 5.1 .AC3 as well - even if you edit the video.
I believe the cryptic notation refers to not being able to convert TO 5.1 .AC3 without purchasing an add-in program...

5.1 AC3 plugin, that's something I don't have... I normally handle this in DVD Maestro.
