i'm on the verge of getting in to this dvd burner malarky,
its not the "which" burner question but rather how much hard disc space do ya need for the dvd2avi. if the dvd main movie vob is about 8gig how large will the avi be(ish) give or take 10gig
Or have i missed somthing?

why do you want to convert the VOB files to an AVI? if you are going to burn them to a DVD, just rip the entire DVD and then burn that to a blank DVD media. No need for an AVI. Since a DVD can hold at most 9 gig a side, you should probably have at least 10 gig free before doing this. Hope this helps.

what about when i want to lower the bitrate so that i can fit what i need on dvd-r. Surly i will need to use dvd2avi then move it into cce for re-encoding at a lower bitrate?

I actually have no idea of how to do that. But I can tell you this. If you are going to go to an uncompressed avi, you need a huge amount of space. I think it is about 10 gig for each half-hour, but I won't swear to that. So if you're doing a 2-hour movie 40 gig sounds about right. So basically, what you want to do is take a DVD, down-sample it to a lower bitrate and then burn it back on to a DVD?

Hi,
Maybe this link will help you:
-> http://www.vcdhelp.com/dvdmoviefactory.htm
I know very little about putting mpeg2+sound streams onto a dvd so i can't vouch at all for this guide. (There's a lot of methods on these pages - vcd, svcd etc. ... just scroll down til u find the appropriate guide - they are there, usually close to bottom of page.)
It'd be handy if you could post any links u find on this subject - my friend just got a dvd burner and i would be interested in finding out more. :) Shame about the cost of blanks atm tho :( , oh well.
Bye.

you can reencode the vobs directly, no need for an avi file. for more detailed info about dvd -> dvd-r you can look at the dvd forum.
