I don't believe that HD-DVD has region codes. I could be wrong but based on what I have read in the HDDVD decrypting thread that you can play any HD-DVD from any country.
If you are looking to hook this up to your Xbox 360 then it probably won't work as of yet.
If you are looking to use strictly with your PC you should be fine.

HD-DVD doesn't have region codes. In fact, one of the early selling points is that you can buy an HD-DVD disc anywhere and it will play in your HD-DVD player.
I have no idea where you can get one in Australia or when they'll be released. Try whatever big electronics sellers you have down under.

@mewsew
I saw an ad on a billboard yesterday for a Toshiba HDDVD player as "coming soon".

It has been seen though that though it doens't have region codes.. the Volume keys are different for different countries. They are experimenting in another thread to see if German and French HD DVD's have the same keys or not. But EUR to US keys are different. Although it doesn't have region codes I wonder if they could ever release software that will only play a certain language..

At the moment, BluRay is being pushed in Australia with players and titles available.
As for HD-DVD, "soon" seems to be the consensus though players and titles are not yet available. If you head to quickflicks.com.au and search for "HD-DVD" they say they will be doing a Netflix type rental of HD-DVD's from February. That indicates players may be available then to coincide with their offerings.
playasia.com and others offer an economical way of getting an xbox add on today and an number of early adopters have gone this route.

Toshba (Spelling) have released the players in Aust i was told by a Hi Fi shop that there is no region codeing yet but there will be in the future.
I am not sure if this is true as he told me after i said i could buy the same player from Japan almost $400 cheaper.
Look at Sydney Hi Fi's web page

The Xbox 360 drive is region free for HD-DVD (verified myself with USA HD-DVD's on EU Xbox 360). Imported versions will work with the appropriate power adapter.
For regular DVD playback through the HD-DVD drive, region control is handled by the console not the drive according to this (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=748740).
{At least that's my understanding}

Thanks for the link.

Unfortunately HD-DVD has adopted a region coding scheme for disks and devices. None of the existing titles (disks) have region restrictions yet, but this may change in the future.
The Xbox 360 HD-DVD addon has to be compliant with the standard, so whatever restrictions are imposed we have to implement.
