I'm using Media Player Classic, and I have tried all of the various rendering modes, and Overlay is the only one that really gives me good playback. The other modes such as VMR9 renderless introduce REALLY BAD tearing, to the point I consider it unwatchable.
Now the problem though, is that media player classic only shows subtitles on VMR7/9 Renderless modes. Is there any way around this problem? Ideally I would prefer to get it to stop tearing.

Did you check your graphics driver settings?
There should be some option like "v-sync". Set it to "always on" or alike.

I haven't got the faintest idea what OS and decoders you use, but I used to have similar problem not a long time ago, yet for other reasons (TV-scale colorrange bug). So in my case I could only use the overlay or VMR7 windowed, that both disable MPC's own subs render.
I started to play with ffdshow more, and decided to use its subtitles function - no problems with srt or txt subs. I could also use its YV12 => RGB conversion, but wanted to spare some % of CPU usage on filters. And what about VS Filter?

@Zarxrax:
Have you tried with haali video renderer?

Finding the vsync in my display settings didnt seem to help any.
Haali video renderer was EXTREMELY slow, so bad that it took MPC like a full minute before it would even pause after I pressed the space bar. Frames were going at about 1/4 realtime.
I forgot that ffdshow supports subtitles. That seems to work alright. I guess I'll let ffdshow handle it from now on. Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

It also works with VSFilter on my system.

just use normal vsfilter(aka dvobsub), just needs to reg the dll and configure it so that it loads when you want ( check the options you want in:
rundll32 vsfilter.ax,DirectVobSub
)
Otherwise, renderer wise, if your video card does PS2 or even PS1.4, i highly recommend haali, that should be running optimally.
Also please keep in mind that all these renderers have various qualities, as described in http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=120946 .
Tearing wise, i have experienced not much of it using haali+soft vsync option.
You might also want to try using reclock with vmr7/9, as it has(iirc) many controls for tearing.
