We can't leave this crappy dead format out, can we? I'm willing to bet PowerDVD 8 BD keeps keys in memory just like the HD-DVD version. All it would take is a drive ($600!) and the same technique as with HD. A rewrite of Muslix's program would be easy too, since the same docs he used for HD are available for BD.

Well the easiest thing would be using the PS3 running linux and external hdd... Is Sun offering Java (I think they should be) for Fedora and YDL? Developing in Java is the best, as many people has so many OS's...

Good luck with the rewrite!

are you talking about movies or games?

games should be possible, paradox found an exploit for ps3 to play backup ps3 games, but they will release the exploit in march (ps3 euro release) because they want to make sure that sony can't release a new firmware for the exploit.
perhaps movies will work also..
sorry about my english ;-)

@dito, well IIRC Sun's java is now licensed under GPL and available as source code, so yeah, you can get java running under ps3 linux :)

Here's an interesting and related article:

AACS may be broken, but not BluRay

http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2007/01/05/AACS_may_be_broken_but_not_bluray/

... "BD+ is a ground-breaking security technology which is designed to enable HD optical formats to recover from major piracy attacks without revoking players or affecting legitimate users. It is a safe-guard that is only available for studios releasing titles in the Blu-ray disc format. BD+ does not exist for the HD DVD format, and was not compromised in the Muslix64 hack.

"A report released by Independent Security Evaluators affirmed that CRI's Self-Protecting Digital Content, the principal architecture behind BD+, significantly enhances the anti-piracy measures in AACS by providing critical format security needs not addressed by AACS alone." ...

old news... and BD+ has to be used first ;) It's not mandatory and iirc not used on any disc that is currently on the market.
Also, the fact that the specs are notwhere to be found should raise some eyebrows. Any competent security researcher will tell you that security through obscurity isn't the way to go.
To see what is publicly available about the mechanism, you can refer to this article: http://www.freedom-to-tinker.com/?p=884

From what I hear the BD+ spec is not even finalized yet, so enough talk of that (at least in this thread :) ).

Now, how about some nice early Japanese Blu-Ray playback software? Anyone have one of these? Or perhaps a laptop that came with a Blu-ray player?

Time to strike while the iron is hot and get some backup software going for the Blu-ray format also.

There are lots of very nice exclusive titles which need to be backed up, and since there is no pesky interactive IME stuff (that's giving the HD DVD backups playback problems) on Blu-Ray, then the backup process should be much easier on Blu-Ray.

Any ideas, anyone?

1 million PS3 sold in Japan and about 600.000 (maybe more?) in the US already... It's going make it hard for them to revoke the PS3's keys... Guess I'll go for BluRay instead of HD-DVD (or maybe both if they get cheap enough)...

BTW. There are some rumors about title-keys for BluRay discs, anyone know something more?

Best regards!

This just in: Possible Blu-ray title/volume key exploit found on PS3

I have received numerous (more than 3) independent reports that an exploit has been found on the PS3 that will reveal the title/volume keys for Blu-ray disks using a PS3. The procedure involves some minor modding of the boot process and Linux.

I have not been told of the exact process but the information makes it seem that the process is not that difficult once you know what you are doing and the lengthy steps are duplicated.

I do not own a PS3 so there is no way for me to deny/verify any of this information.

@diro & He-Man - how does rumour-mongering advance things?

Please observe rule 11 carefully.

Well if this rumor is true it gives a good hint about where to start looking for keys.
Where to find HD-DVD keys to use with BackupHDDVD also just started as rumors.
Just about everything can be regarded as just rumors until you have been able to verify it yourself.
I have read that video clips confirming the PS3 exploit has also been posted on Russian underground forums, but I haven't seen it myself.
I just read rule 11 and can't see i violtaed that rule in any way. I didn't just post just to increase my post count but becasue I actually had something to say, that might turn out to be useful info in the search for Blu-Ray keys. Who cares about post counts anyway?

The rule essentially is about "no use" posts (although worded more about post count).

Let's have some real info here. By all means, when posters have some stuff to get our teeth into, please post. Otherwise, lets not post unfounded rumours please.

In the first post, you were talking about PowerDVD. Reading the HD-DVD thread I thought that it was only WinDVD up to now which has been compromised. Are there any news that I have overseen?
Futhermore, the Plextor BD burner e.g. is being shipped with WinDVD BD - this version might be as weak as the HD-DVD version, but you have to know what to look for...

Is it okay to post the some of the long hints that can be found with some hints of searching?

Blutach feel free to delete this post if it doesn't come into the context of the rules.

These seem to apply for games rather than straight video discs.

Can someone with some knowledge of the blu-ray format add if this information is of any use?

Disclaimer: I have absolutely no knowledge of the Blu-ray technology nor it's design or implementation.

Again, I fail to see how this speculation from a noted warez supplier advances things, but I know you've posted it in trying to help.

As Bluray backup has come a long way in the last few days, I think the existing threads are better places to conduct our tests and analysis.

Therefore I'm closing this thread. Let's keep to the science.
